I for one, am disappointed. This was definitely the most polished VR game I played but at the same time very safe, adding nothing new to the genre, even dumbing down what HL2 did with physics puzzles.
Story is spread so thin throughout the game that basically only 2 out of 11 chapters have anything relating to HL.
Combat is great, visuals are fantastic considering I played on a hardware that only handled low settings. I also really enjoyed the horror parts (one reminded me a lot of The Last of Us)
Too much just plain walking, tedious puzzles to do every-fucking-thing. Even opening inventory boxes requires hacking, in the end-game they got even more complicated so I just left them alone tired of doing the same thing 3 times just to get 2 ammo clips.
At least the ending somewhat makes up for it, but for non-VR people: just watch last 2 chapters on YT and you'll know everything people who played the game will know as it's static scenes with exposition dialogue and a cutscene.
Took me 9 hours to finish, there's only so many times you extend the game by messing around with the same physical objects in otherwise static worlds. Without the artifical extenders of looking for ammo, opening puzzles for combine shit and routing power this would be a 3-4hr game tops.
Uh oh. Prepare to be labelled a VR hater, garusa

You are right. It was originally a 4 hour game that eventually got the whole of Valve on it and it got extended, but the core story remained the one written for the smaller game.
Turns out, we were right all along. In an interview with Ars Technica, members of the Half-Life: Alyx team confirmed that a brief HL-flavored "shooting gallery" was built behind the scenes in 2016 for possible inclusion in The Lab, a free suite of demos made by Valve to advertise the potential of the HTC Vive and its SteamVR ecosystem of games and apps. This demo was never released. Instead, it got the company excited and was quietly turned into a richer VR experience—one whose scope was originally much lighter, somewhere in the four-hour range.
A subset of Valve began developing VR-appropriate Half-Life gameplay systems, and in the early stages, it also considered what kind of story might be appropriate—meaning, the team knew a brainless "shooting gallery" wouldn't cut it. But what scale would make sense for a VR-exclusive game that might turn out to be quite short? That couldn't be Half-Life 3, Valve decided. Instead, it would be a prequel, one with arguably lower stakes but still able to tell a new, and crucial, story within the series' universe. From there, the game's development kept getting bigger and bigger.
Quote:
Couple this with what Valve told me in an interview—that the plot they imagined was originally meant for a shorter game—and the result is something worth lowering expectations about, at least if your plot hopes revolve around a lengthy story with many criss-crossing characters. HL:A's cast is intimate, not sweeping. While the story's ultimate impact on all things Half-Life is huuuuuuuuuuuuuge (that's 13 u's), its plot summary is shorter than either of HL2's episodes.
But I've played for something like 14 hours? and I've only reached the middle of it and I haven't become sick of it, so while I will agree there isn't so much story, I will disagree the gameplay loops are boring/empty.
I may become sick of them later as you hinted it becomes too much later. We'll see!

I see they are getting closer to a 2D experience....like I said earlier in this post but you guys said "No Way"...(UPDATE) Valve Predicts Half-Life: Alyx Will Eventually Be Playable Without VR
Yes, let's repost for the third time a 2 day old video that shows what happens when you execute a built in console command that has since been removed, that shows we are getting closer

Artifact and Underlords are nothing alike in their popularity and reception. Underlords is popular and successful with thousands of players, Artifact has 200 players right now.

(Bah, that orangeish lighting seems sooo good in the video, despite being static / baked. Can't wait to reach those locations in game).

Is there such a thing? The whole notion of steaming is abhorrent to me in the first place. Watching random fuckwits play a game is about as tempting as watching paint dry, but on top of that people that get excited because they can pick up a bottle and throw it? Eh, pass.
Besides, you basically confirmed exactly what I suspected, so I doubt I'll even bother with the non-VR modded version whenever that finally turns up. If you want to provide a TL:DR of any actual relevant plot points in the game, that would be appreciated. If not, presumably a summary will soon be (or already is) on Wikipedia or the like.
Edit: It is indeed on Wikipedia. Sounds lame.

agreed. But i think this is the whole point, its seems to be a entry point for vr games. The game plays it safe (the game even told me to do what i should do next, as i was staying around and looking for shit to loot hehe). I thought the puzzles there not that difficult in a sense that you have something to write down or draw a map or some oldschool shit. No, short and sweet. Combat was hectic sometimes, but nothing what even a completely new player can handle.
Storywise youre are right too, but i didnt even care until you mention it. That on iteself makes it for me a good game.
And for those who think what this game can be "played" with mouse and kb or without vr, whats the point? You would destroy the whole atmosphere, and a 2d alyx would be a half baked shooter abomination. Why?
I installed this release: Half-Life Alyx (v4809432 + VR Ready, MULTi11) | 44.7 GB
Works great on the CV1 using highest Ultra performance,. !!! Jaw Dropping graphics... Man, I can already tell this is best VR game out..
I wouldn't say no, but I'd much rather have them make a new game and push the story forward. The community can use the Alyx assets to remake HL2.
