Looking for a terrific 4x space strategy game. Must have really good fleet vs fleet tactical battles (this is of primary importance). Graphics don't have to be perfect, but I don't want pixelated ships though either. I don't want super simple, yet I also don't want to have to read a 50 page manual in order to play as I don't have the time investment for that - so in other words, I guess "medium" complexity. What are your recommendations?
Sins Rebellion? Sword of the Stars (first one - I hear the second one (SOTSII) is still crap)? Galactic Civ II? other?
I saw things like that in here and in other "woman problems" topics so...... Am I the only one that thinks some authorities needs to be alerted about Saner and him possibly being a rapist and/or kidnapper ?
Saner is not being serious. Unless its the subject of Santa!
Just watched a vid of some space battles - what the hell is that giant robot like ship that seems to shoot from its penis??!?? pls tell me it is a custom design. If not, LMFAO!
Pax Imperia I will rule out almost immediately. Combat looks atrocious.
Master Of Orion 2 (actually have this but haven't played it yet) - looks better than above, but was hoping for a bit of a graphical upgrade in the ship-to-ship combat - haven't rule it out.
Galatic Civ II - looking into - might fit the bill for me (?)
Space Empires V - will look into. More complex than Galatic Civ II?
Star Drive - reading suggests it is ridiculously complex.
if the combat doesn't do it for me, then everything else falls apart - what is the point in exploring, research, ship design, diplomacy, etc, if the fleet combat sucks. Quite the anti-climax as far as I am concerned. Any ways, that is my point of view.

Love MoO2, but I'd argue MoO1 has more longevity. That's the game I keep replaying when I need my 4x fix. That or Distant Worlds or modded-to-hell MoO3.
In case one doesn't cares about graphics at all (seriously, MoO1 looks like Crysis to this one), he will always find one of the most complex 4x games in Stars!.
Contains everything you'll need to get it going. Full game download, instructions on how to get it working on modern comps, utilities and offcourse, excel spreadsheets.
I can also recommend Haegemonia: Legions of Iron & Solon Heritage by the same developers. Although it has more RTS elements (~Sins), it still fulfilled my MOO/4x hunger; The pacing is not too fast and you can pause/adjust time speed. So sad the devs stopped making space games, they clearly had a talent for it.
Haegemonia had one of the best looking explosions in a space game at the time (especially stations). The battles felt epic because ships were tough and not made of paper. Building a battle space station next to a warp gate was fun and an effective way to block systems.
Go for Sword of The Stars. It is medium to low complexity on strategy layer and great fun in battles.
Stardrive is pretty simple apart from designing ships, which is a lot of fun. One thing that puts me off there is that everything is real time and larger empires get really hard to control.
Sins of solar empire serie is great imo. Theres some newer dlcs for Rebellion which is already very nice.
Endless Space is more strategy and less space, battles are very restricted.
Yeah, I wouldn't recommend Endless Space, it's way too bland and generic. Got bored with it very quickly. Everything is so restricted (you don't really fight the battles but draw 3 cards, and space travel is along set courses) and in general you don't really feel 'connected' with your empire.
I played ES at around the same time as StarDrive, and the difference is pretty big. SD is a much better and lasting game (out of those two).
There must have been a door there in the wall, when I came in.
Truly gone fishing.
