| i changed CPU and was not asked to reactivate, but 2 weeks later i changed memory and replaced vid card and needed to reactivate. i think it has to do with how much of a change within a certain amount ... |

It is hardware specific. Microsoft is not able to find out exactly what hardware you have, they get a hash value of the codes. It's the same in XP.
