I tried googling but couldn't find anything specific to a "free" version of windows 8. What do you think the odds are if I just swap out my MB/CPU that windows 8 will still boot up/be OK? not sure if this stuff matters, but ... New MB has Q67 chipset, CPU is i5-2500 @ 3.30 GHz (socket 1155) Old MB has H57 chipset, CPU is i3-550 @ 3.2 GHz (socket 1156) I really would like to save myself the headache of a complete re-install. found this stuff really cheap at an auction so hoping it also solves my previous RAM problem... asus z170-A \|\| core i5-6600K \|\| geforce gtx 970 4gb \|\| 16gb ddr4 ram \|\| win10 \|\| 1080p led samsung 27"

Can be done, but I wouldn't recommend it. It's probably gonna cause certain headaches down the line. Also, Windows will need activated again, free or legit

after a little playing around with it I think I'm going to try and get the new box up and running on its own with a new install before I do anything... I also swapped z77 setup -> to a current z97 setup and no problems.

unless you will get bsod, then i'd suggest doing back up with acronis and restoring it with Acronis Universal Restore details here https://kb.acronis.com/content/47606
