I have 2 USB disks (no external power) and a PSP. When I connect these to my front USB slots they sometimes don't work properly and I have to get down and dirty to reach the back USB ports. I'm thinking of buying a USB hub with external power, that should solve my problems, right? I found a 7-port one that costs 15 euros and has an optional external power adapter. I mean it works without it, too.

Did you check the cables? Maybe the connectors in the motherboard USB header are loose.

I've never trusted front slots for anything other than plugging gamepads into. I always use a powered USB hub for everthing else.

I've always had one that just randomly stopped working one day on my moms computer and fried her MP3 player.
