After his death, the deaths of his heirs within a decade, and the Norman conquest of England in 1066, his legacy was largely lost to history. Historian Norman Cantor has made the statement that he was "the most effective king in Anglo-Saxon history", despite his not being Anglo-Saxon.
The Normans were the people who gave their name to Normandy, a region in northern France. They were descended from Viking conquerors of the territory and the native Merovingian culture formed from Germanic Franks and Romanised Gauls (see Gallo-Roman culture). Their identity emerged initially in the first half of the 10th century, and gradually evolved over succeeding centuries. |
It's funny that Vikings (who got a big french province named after them, "Normans" means Nordmän (Northern/Norse Men after the Swedish or Danish Rollo) were a kind of huge Empire except it was not cohesive since Norwegian, Danish and Swedish vikings all had separate kingdeoms. Rollo (c. 846 – c. 931), baptised Robert and so sometimes numbered Robert I to distinguish him from his descendants, was a Norse nobleman of Norwegian or Danish descent who was founder and first ruler of the Viking principality which soon became known as Normandy. His descendants were the Dukes of Normandy, and following the Norman conquest of England in 1066, kings of England.
ie. vikings ruled UK and part of France, Kiev (actually formed the Kievan Rus state, hence the name Russia or Rusland), worked as the Varangian Guard in the Byzantine Empire etc.

I guess that explains why many Russians, Ukrainians, Belarusians etc. are blonde or have blue eyes.

William the Conqueror finally threw the Danes out. But William the Conqueror was himself of Viking descent and all in all one Viking took the England from another Viking.
After the Romans left Britannia the Saxons (germanic tribes) came and invaded and took over, creating kingdoms, then came the Viking Empire (first Danes, then Norwegian and some Swedish viking hordes although the Swedish vikings went eastward and all the way down to Byzantium etc., founded the state of Kievan Rus and so on) and took huge chunks out of that and created settlements in Yorkshire and then the eastern half of Mercia. Then came William the Conqueror (from Normandy), another of viking descent and took over.
So I guess the only brits in the UK are the Welsh and the Cornish populations. The rest have viking/scandinavian and germanic DNA. 
Which in turn means England is a vassal state of Scandinavia and almost every English and Irish person is in fact bastardised Vikings.
