I'd be interested to hear from an american what the reality there actually is. How much do insurance rates cost? And how much does insurance actually cover? (I see some bills covered by insurance yet non-insured amount is still huge). What is the chance of a normal working insurance-paying individual encountering bills like these?

A California study published last year in the Archives of Internal Medicine found that after an appendectomy, patients received bills varying from $1,500 to $180,000. The average was $33,000, and the researchers "included only uncomplicated cases with hospital stays of less than four days," the Associated Press notes. "There's no system at all to determine what is a rational price for this condition or this procedure," study author Renee Hsia of UC San Francisco told the AP. |

I should show them my last bill which was 300SEK for the ambulance and full day at the hospital getting blood tests, ultrasound, all the glorious morphine, muscle relaxers and other medication + transportation home. Another 400SEK for the next day in the hospital doing a scan at radiology + bloods tests and medication...
So 700 SEK -> 79€, Bet they'll be shouting Communist
Healthcare... it's truly evil
Would have cost a bit more in Belgium tho, so I was even surprised by it. Girlfriend laughed when I asked: did your stepfather fixed the bills or something? (he was the Ambulance driver picking me up that night ). But nope it seems it's just cheaper here

To add, I've been quite sick as of late and having terrible issues with my stomach. I've been going to the doctors very often lately which costs around 150-300 for every time I visit, this sounds expensive but as soon as the amount accumulates to around 1200SEK within a year I get a free-card which means that for a whole year I don't have to pay anything for _any_ doctors visit.
And even when I had a colonoscopy, ultrasound diagnosis and swallowing a tiny camera capsule all it cost me was a fee to visit the doctor (300SEK). I can't imagine that these things would cost me so little in the states.
However, that said. It took them here 4-5 years and visiting 4 different doctors before I even got to this part (mostly because I was being a good Swede and not making a fuss, this is where my blatteblood should have kicked in 5 years ago) where I got any kind of worthy diagnosis.
But in the end, I'm glad we have the kind of healthcare here that we do.

If your ill in America just book a flight over to the UK and get it free or at least cheaper, all you will have to do is pay for your flight and somewhere to stay, would be ALOT cheaper doing that then getting it done in America lol

if you have insurance, they bill you 500%, so they take money from the insurance companies
if you don't have insurance, they bill you 100-150%..

This only happens for people who have no insurance. But Medicare would probably only pay half. There are really some shitty insurance out there.
My dad has on okay insurance.
He had bypass surgery few years back and the bill that we received was $250K. That includes couple days in hospital plus the surgery itself. After he had it, he was in hospital for 2 days and after that they told him to go home . And this is what rapes, a day in hospital can easily be at least $10K.
We were worried we were going to have to pay at least 10-20% from that sum but luckily insurance paid it in full. They even covered 20% of my Lasik surgery AND they also covered plenty of tooth canals and crowns. A lot of companies don't even provide dental/vision coverage. So it's not like if you have insurance you are fully covered.

Obamacare is not socialized medicine. Obamacare is just a form of insurance that people are forced to get if they do not have insurance. Ex. Low income woman is forced to pay for insurance.
Most proper insurance companies will pay your entire bill for the most part,(including the new obamacare) most of these bills I see are from people without insurance.
And I see a few people in here saying they have "free medicine" but in reality they don't, when the last time you checked your taxes that they take weekly? monthly? yearly?
Every medical system is corrupt, and one is no better then the next. They all have their pro and cons, and i've seen this traveling the world. Saying Americans are Stupid, because of their medical system is quite silly. And zmed, if you truly understood what an unregulated free market was, then you wouldn't have said that comment. Our medical system is regulated, and America hasn't had a true free market since the "industrial revolution".
I was born in England, and theirs no way I want to go back to that shit hole. 50% of my yearly taxes were taken, and it was mostly for medical which was 35% i believe? How is that any different then insurance exactly? It isn't
Is America medical system awful and corrupt? Sure is, but so is yours, without you even realizing it. You just assume its "great" because it's "free" when it's really not. Nothing in this world is free, you should all know that. But you have nothing to blame but ourselfs for using such a poor method of trade such as paper.
I've been around the world, and all I've seen is hate towards various countries, including america, russia, germany, and japan mostly.. We sit there and let our governments do what they want, without any repercussions, like they control the show. Without the people there is no country. This non understanding of cultures needs to stop, in the end, not being understanding ends up sending us to pointless, and useless wars.
Let's all be adults here, and solve the issue, instead of talking shit about it. Let's use this glorious way of communicating to bring the cultures of the world together, and realize that we are all the same. Just humans trying to live

you are right, and wrong
My healthcare is not free (3% of my salary, 6% from my employer), but if I go to a private hospital, and get a heart bypass, it will not cost me $250K, probably less than $5K..
Like how can a night in a US hospital be MORE EXPENSIVE than a 6* hotel?

Word, it depends on the insurance. My uncles heart bypass was about 350$. The system itself is corrupt, yes. I have never personally have been charged these expensive prices for staying a night in the hospital. I spent the day/night in the hospital here in Ohio due to a stomach virus. My bill was 1000$, which is you look at the guy who got charged 100k, i had about the same procedures done to me.
The main fact is in this country, you need to pay a monthly fee to make sure you medical bills are low, just as much as everyone else, it makes no sense, and most Americans don't like how todays medicine work in this country, and they don't want to be taxed for socialized medicine. So again, American is always fighting between two different ideas, instead of solving the issue.
Edit:
Another reason our medical is awful here, is the Doctors. A lot of them just don't care and are in it for the money. That's another issue we have here. It's mostly ER doctors. Private doctors are the best to go to over here.

I have absolutely no problem with any taxes I pay being used to find a universal healthcare system for everyone who is entitled to it, infact I find the current governments slow drip feed of "Isn't the NHS shite" news so they can sell it of to their buddies a shameless state of current affairs and things like the NHs should be protected. I find the whole idea of the American way of doing it inhuman, and it makes me glad that for all the faults England undoubtedly has we still have things like the NHS, well until the Tories take it apart.

No one would think anything is shite, when you can get opiates 7.50quid. You say you find the american way of doing things inhuman? But yet its practically the same thing. You pay or get taxed, and you get cheap medical care. There is no difference. I was forced to get taxed over there, and then I had a choice to get insurance over here. Since 2014 I am forced to get insurence now.
Whats inhuman is the AMA(American Medical Association). You know, those guys who said Cigarettes are healthy.
There are so many inhumane things in this world... and yet so many good things. All the good doctors over here that pay out of their pockets for there patients. I would prefer if you said "the system" is inhumane and not Americans.
What's inhumane is that your left over taxes go to help America fight their useless wars. Thats inhumane is you ask me.
Edit:
I want to say im not defending Americas healthcare. Nor am I making fun of other Healthcare. My point is I don't agree with current Healthcare in America, or around the world at all.

So if im wrong tell me. I moved out of England when i was 20 man. It's been 7 years for me
