I want to replay some of my older 360 titles like gow trilogy, saints row1 etc etc etc but The blacks are crushed to hell.
On my old 226bw, I just had to enable expanded in 360 settings and it was ok as far as I remember (maybe I remember wrong). Was using the same vga cable as I am using now.

Here on my u2312hm (I have it for year now and its a great display. Just not played 360 more than once last year so...) I also set 360 to "expanded" setting and every black/shadow is crushed. On standard setting it's all wrong the other way around.
I know that expanded means full rgb range and standard is limited, so it seems that I want to use full rgb setting for my u2312hm but why it's too dark then ?

Then i've noticed there is a gamma setting in that display's osd. I can switch gamma to pc and mac. those are only two gamma options. but should the pc setting (which is selected) be a right option? The monitor is set to accept PC range and 360 is set to expanded to send that.
And here comes interesting part. Setting this gamma to "mac" option seems to help with crushed blacks , while maintaining "black-is-black"

so??? what am I doing worng
btw. How to get best blacks/calibration out of tht monitor?
and what are right settings for my old 720p lg hdtv I have? standard or expanded?

WHY THE FUCK THERE ARE 2 Standards at all.. everything should be full rgb. There is no point to having limited 16-235 screens... it only introduces problems and confusion as I see it's a major problem. most people don't have their tv's or monitors set correctly, corresponding to the signal the device is sending and are either playing on too dark or washed out screens.

I feel you. I get the same problems and more.

My son's xbox 32 inch old style tv and gaming looks for some reason better at times than my 32 bravia. It seems more so in games like bf4 etc, where I know the quality is a ton less texture wise but it looks worse if thats possible on mine than his lol.

I can never seem to get shit to look correct, its like everything is more down scaled than it should be as well. Like even though no AA his models look less AA'd than mine.

sort of gave up and just accepted it over time ...

You're using VGA? Why? What happens when you hdmi? As far as your monitor goes, your settings sound correct. What happens when you raise the brightness in the ingame menu?

Maybe some games are not meant for 0-255 and instead the devs intended 16-235?

Maybe. But its not only on old games. Dark souls1 is also crushed and it wasnt on my old 226bw.
and i am using vga because dell dont have hdmi input and pc takes dvi.
but its all also crushed whe i am using hdmi cable to connect to tv. Maybe thats because I connected into pc labeled hdmi input on tv... will check later.

that way or another yeah... it was always a chire with those black levels for me. There is option in 360 for that but as You said, each game migh have separate black levels from 360 setting which shoukd not be the case but prolly is

so? Anyone figured it out? Not sure what the deal is.

I have expanded in console, tv and momitor set to pc levels. And games are too dark. at least old games which is weird. like gta iv and dark souls or gears of war1.

btw. Is standard and expanded on xbox360 equal to 1.8 and 2.2 gamme (pc and mac) ?

i almost guarantee it's vga connection to blame. when you set expanded in 360 and everything looks too dark, it means your display is running in limited RGB mode. you should have spent fraction of the cost more and bought monitor with multiple hdmi inputs.

you can try connect console to dvi input and see if problem is fixed, if so, you can get a hdmi switch, so you connect console and pc via 2x HDMI cables to switch, and from switch you use hdmi->dvi cable to your monitor. that should work.

i use one of these myself because i have fuckton of consoles and it worked wonders. Very Happy

ok so it's your monitors problem. it's been forever since i used a console on monitor without HDMI. all HDMI monitors allow you to choose limited or full RGB range so problem you describe is easily fixable, but your screen probably doesn't have such setting. it's weird because PC monitors should be running in full RGB range anyway.

another possibility is.... you just suck at screen calibration Laughing

I am always confused with black levels. The best way would be to start the same game on 360 and pc and switch inputs to see if it looks the same !

they say ignorance is bliss. When i told my friend " hey check your black levels on tv and ps3 to see if You are playing in correct colors!"... he was happy playing washed out games for 5 years Laughing

Found the answer!

Gamma on 360 is not real 2.2. In fact it is faked 2.2 without proper curve. That's why it dont really look correct on any setting.

And when it comes to old game - they are too dark on expanded setting because they come from time when 360 only option was standard and then so they are premade darker to fit 1.8 gamma
