Suppose this is the best section for this Smile

This is already turning out to be the most interesting CES in years. The Verge has all the news, I'm just making this thread as a general discussion thread: http://www.theverge.com/

Dolby's going into display technologies and standards now, focus on colour reproduction and brightness (YAY). They built a crazy liquid cooled display with 18000 LEDs to showcase what they're after. Sharp, TCL and Vizio already taking part of this. Vizio are also dropping all 3D support (YAY).

Google's pushing Android into automotive, LG's taking webOS for their smart TVs (So Much Win), Parrot's new drones look like fantastic fun.

Are we going to move away from 3D TV's?I was looking to buy one later this year. I was checking out Vizio 3D TV last month but I guess Vizio is out of the question now.

Well 3D has flopped, so Vizio's probably only the first. The rest will likely ramp down 3D production and focus on OLED and 4K instead.

Obviously from my post, I couldn't care less. 3D in its current state does absolutely nothing for me, other than fuck up image quality. I'll more accurate colours and higher brightness over 3D nonsense.

well after it proved it fucked up your eyes [could make you lose depth perception] , then yeah ... all are now going retro tech with retro ideas , VR helmets aka Amazing Derp Smart Glasses ... Oculus Rift and so on... now possible with miniaturization

and tvs now are now all about brightness , color , the shape of that screen and input lag

I second 120+Hz IPS panels.

Been waiting to buy a new monitor for like a year now, just can't chose between image quality and responsiveness, as in the current state there is little middle ground. Unless you gamble with some Korean panels.

Or Eizo's FG2421 Smile

LG's implementation of webOS for a TV:
http://www.theverge.com/2014/1/6/5279220/rebooting-webos-how-lg-rethought-the-smart-tv

Execution seems to be great. Clean, consistent, simple. Still not a fan of silly motion and pointer remotes though Very Happy

The FG2421 - man, have I been thinking a lot about that ... But. Did you check the price on it? Don't know about Netherlands, but here it costs 600 euros. I just ... I just can't spend that much on it. Just .. can't.

I know, it's 500 here. There's just literally no competition for it at the moment, so they can pull it off. The closest competition there will be are the G-Sync TN ones; and those are going to be 600+ here. Well at those prices, I'll take the vastly superior image quality of a VA panel over G-Sync.

Other than that there are the Korean ones, which we have to import and that still comes out to 300 EUR - assuming it doesn't get stuck in customs, in which case you get to pay VAT + fine.

Transport costs even more to us.

I don't care for G-sync, as I am so used to tearing. And TN panels are just a no.

I was thinking about the FS2333, it is only 60fps, but very low input lag. Seems I just have to wait some more time (like 6+ months, probably).

That's aside from passive 3D not being new. LG has only ever done passive.

And yes, it has flopped. Most people either don't give a shit about 3D or get headaches from active glasses (half of my relatives do).

Well i actually played quite some games in 3D while i was in Amsterdam, and i really liked it.
I'm even thinking of getting it myself.. Especially Tomb Raider 2013 looked REALLY good in 3D Neutral
Played for hours and hours and not a single headage Razz
Only a tad motion sickness, but that could be the combination of that big fat joint i was smoking during that Razz

I must say, since I experienced 3D in Oculus Rift, 3D on TVs is just poor. In Cinemas its kind of OKish, but most of the time it just keeps you from seeing details.

"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

Off-topic, but: it's slightly oversaturated out of the box and Eizo omitted the sRGB profile because they didn't see the point for gaming (already told them that was a silly thought Razz). It trails slightly behind top IPS displays (U2311, FS2333) but that has more to do with the fact that it's VA than the calibration. Still beats the crap out of any TN monitor Smile

No other sizes.

Well he got paid to read from a teleprompter, not wing it. He probably felt embarrassed to have to wing it about a product he likely had little knowledge of. The Samsung guy wasn’t picking up the slack like he should’ve, instead passing it to Michael, and Michael couldn’t & didn’t have to handle that pressure and left. It was going to be embarrassing either way because clearly Michael had nothing to say & the Samsung rep should’ve took complete control once he noticed the situation. It’s a tiny loss for Samsung & a messed up situation for Michael.

At least few years ago OLED panels had horribly short durability so that was one of their biggest problems atm. I'm not sure how is current situation regarding that.

What comes to "4K" panels please pay attention to their input lag + 60Hz over HDMI. Wink

I have no problem with passive 3D. My sis has LG with 3d, and it's actually kinda cool to watch some movies in 3d. The problem is that there aren't that many movies in 3d that you can dl. Well not the ones that don't suck that is grinhurt
