Whenever I plug in a new monitor in my 680, which previously I did every week, moving my HDMI cable from my PC to a console (360 or PS3) or vice versa, and now since I have my PC hooked up to my reciever to send the signal to my projector, it happens everytime I turn the damn reciever on - Windows decides to move aaaall my goddamn open windows (explorer, Chrome, Steam etc) to that monitor (in this case being the projector). And it's annoying as fuck, since it also resizes them in the process.

This did NOT happen before - how long ago I'm not sure, but say about a year ago, it did not happen. I could unplug and plug in the HDMI cable without any issues, same video card too.

Can this be fixed? Please say it can :/ I always keep my display driver up to date. Also, I'm on Win 8 (not 8.1 yet, haven't really bothered).

In my case the screen will only refresh when you switch on the screen connected to the receiver on or off, not the receiver itself - that might be due to HDMI control being on (it keeps the connection active on some level). Either way, that refresh is unavoidable.

As far as moving windows goes, it happens on my setup as well. Whenever I switch on the TV hooked up to my receiver, it seems to shift all the windows left (windows on the right screen go to the center one and middle ones go to the left, etc). When I switch it off, the windows shift back where they were. And this despite the screen actually existing in the desktop manager all the time - the desktop composition never actually changes when I switch the TV on or off, but it refreshes anyway.

Windows is a bit quirky that way with multiple screens, sometimes even moving whole icons to the other side of the screen or to a different monitor entirely.
Unfortunately, I don't think anything can be done to fix the issue entirely, BUT there is a workaround that works for me:
Before switching the device that causes the refresh on or off, hit WinKey+D do show desktop (don't minimize - this doesn't seem to work), then after the screen refresh hit WinKey+D again to get the windows back. Somehow they stay put when you do it that way.

That happens every time I power down the monitor after I got the DisplayPort caple to replace the DVI-D one (Did not happen with the 290 though during the brief time I had it, odd.) basically HDMI and DisplayPort are handled such as being uninstalled when the monitor is powered off (Instead of as with DVI it still retains some signal connection as I understood it.) so Windows Vista and later revert to a virtual screen resolution of 1024x768 which moves all active windows as well, and some background windows depending on what applications are running. Smile

EDIT: For Nvidia GPU's this answer might help. Smile

Not using DisplayPort at the moment, so that fix won't make a difference, right? Sad

So I guess there is no way of fixing it.. this is surprisingly annoying when it happens every day now. There's not a day when I don't turn the reciever on, and like I said, before the moving of windows only happened rarely when I had unplugged and moved the cable, which wasn't very often. Now it's every damn day Sad

Are you using Windows 8? It should have better multi-monitor support than any previous versions.

I have pretty much the same set up as you and it will also move stuff around and in general act like an ass while switching inputs. (On Windows 7)

Yep, I'm on 8. I mean it supports and works well with many monitors, EXCEPT that it moves all windows when the reciever is turned on..

DisplayPort and HDMI both function like that compared to DVI so the fix should work. Smile

Oh, well I was going to try this, but I don't have the Workstation section, nor the System topology-settings in my nVidia control panel.. :/
