It is a pure drama, don't expect any real "goal" for this series. Watch the first episode if you want to and this'll be basically get for the rest of the first season Some music, a lot of good actors and just a part of their lives.
Just so you know even the wire had 100times more pew pew than this

Well, after a year I gave this series a shot - mostly due to the fact that there's only shit broadcasting now and that it after all is an HBO-production by the makers of "The Wire".
So is Treme for me? It's hard to say... first I'll give you a list of reasons why to watch it:
1. It has great music in it if you like jazz, blues and r&b (and some country), all episodes have at least a couple of songs and focus around the music of New Orleans to the point where it feels like a documentary of New Orleans music.
2. It has great actors in it, there's a lot of familiar faces from The Wire in this series and solid, well-written characters with in-depth character backgrounds.
3. It is of historical value, no doubt the majority of the series gives a good perspective of the flood in New Orleans, a lot of stuff that you would never know from news or articles about this place, told by people who actually were there. Tha authenticity of Treme is top notch.
4. Authenticity, I already said it but it can't be said enough times. You watch this shit for its authenticity. Everything feels like a very well produced documentary from 2006 down to minute details, they even got the same people who did shit to repeat the second lines, and parades from back then with the same clothes and everything.
5. Atmosphere, once you get dragged into this series you'll start feeling sweaty and warm, you'll start smelling the smells of a damp, hot, post-flood old town. You'll feel like you are there, you will most definitely pick up on the culture and the moods, the frustrations and joys. If you want a New Orleans-experience this is second to none in terms of atmosphere.
---
Now, why would you NOT want to watch this show?
1. Pacing, it has very slow pacing. Everything is focused around characters primarily. And some of the characters are quite uninteresting. Scenes drag on and on telling stories that you have a hard time to identify with. It's a lot of tragedy drawn out.
2. Lack of focus, sice the series does not have a main character it jumps around a lot between different people all the time. You'll like some of them, and you'll get bored by some others. Some stories will drag on and make you frustrated and be like "I want back to that story, this is as dull as shit". Treme is about a place, the place is the main character, and the whole series follows suit. Expect some stuff to be very mundane and uninteresting.
3. Derpression, this is about the depression of post-Katrina in the poor district of New Orleans primarily. There will be a lot of depressed people struggling with depressions and dark shit. If you want to watch relationships fall apart due to drug problems, alcoholism, not making rent, and a guy beating a girl, etc. this is for you.
4. No gore, action or juice, if you like a little violence, action, gore or juicy nakedness every once in awhile, this will disappoint you. You are more likely to see a scene of an old man dying in a hospital than to see some full-on nudity or gunshot action. Do not expect the pacing to pick up and become intense, this series chugs along at the very same pace for episode after episode after episode.
5. Lack of a distinct goal... just like real life, you are looking at peoples lives here. There will be no "mission" or "quest" that everything is working towards. This series is very real, it will be more about how to move on with life, how to deal with shit, plans that won't work, people that won't stick together, anti-climax endings to a story that seems to have been told for too long with a depressing anti-climactic ending and then cut to the next aimless story.
All-in-all:
Treme still has its moments, you know you can't throw the producers and authors of The Wire together with some real solid actors from the same series without there being that something that makes things interesting. Despite its flaws, Treme still is extremely well-produced, well cut, and of significantly higher production value than almost anything you can see on television. There are no ifs, buts or maybes about Treme being a drama though. This is NOT Game of Thrones, Rome, Spartacus, Sopranos, or even The Wire. The "action" that is in here always ebbs out into an anti-climax and depression, the "sex" that is in here occurs for three seconds and is then about something depressing (usually poverty) - and do not expect it to be graphic. What is graphic is the social realism, the corpses, the mold, the dust, the dirty clothes, the sense of everything falling apart whilst people working real hard to make it. It's about overcoming obstacles and difficulties (and often failing anyway) whilst trying to maintain some sense of a positive attitude through music, partying, alcohol and good food.
Yes, yes I'm back.
Somewhat.

Well let's hope HBO keep him
I really can't explain what it was about Treme that kept me watching. The pacing is insanely slow, there's no action of any form, there's no amazing central storyline - none of that. It's not a documentary either. And yet, I kept watching
