in all fairness I think it's quite clear how the illusion of freedom works in the states. The only saving grace left in the US is that it's a secular place and not run by religious zealots... Oh wait.

You're right. You'd fit in just fine in a KKK militia in the middle of a swamp in north Mississippi.

Why bash him? Clearly hes just stating that perceived freedom is different then true freedom. Confused

Well we could always try saying Negroes are subhumans in Harlem...

I mean, point being? You can get beaten up anywhere in the world for spouting ignorance Laughing

You won't get arrested. It's one of those laws that almost never gets used. And I'm sure most countries have laws like that. It's there for when something really goes too far.

But yeh guess statistics like this just look black and white. Tho I really doubt you won't get arrested if you spout nonsense like that in Harlem. Even if they invoke: "it's for your own safety" your so called 'true' freedom is being limited.

Dunno about Belgium ofc..but in Sweden you would get arrested if you said something like that in Public.
If we continue to use racism/rightwing stuff as an example, you would pretty much get arrested by anything here that would be considered offensive. A law that imo is just pathetic.

I don't know how this data is gathered but apparently its not right. The N1 freedom countries are all former USSR slave countries like Romania, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Poland, etc. Its almost law free zone, the law says 14 (you know what I mean), you can buy alcohol and cigarettes at any age, you can drive without license, stuff like that. Oh and if you kill somebody most of the time you will get away with probationary sentence or 2 years in jail which is the worst case scenario.

In America you can't buy booze until you are 21.. yeah freedom.. sure. The only free stuff in the US is that you can buy military grade weapons like you are buying Pepsi at the gas station. Besides that, its not that free country.

True you Swedes are champions at being political correct. And it annoys the hell out of me that your government goes way further than it should. Razz

However I hear a lot more racists jokes on TV or on the streets here compared to when I lived in Belgium. My girlfriend was a bit surprised until I started pointing them out

You must be confusing freedom with corruption Wink

Edit: Oh, and laws arent always something against freedom...they are quite often there to make sure accidents/and stupid things dont happen! Wink

Yes, drinking age is the barometer for freedom. Laughing

I'm going to start up a cotton plantation and force people to work for me and pay them nothing.

But hey, they can start drinking the moment they are born! They're free!

In most cases an illusion I would say. Seeing we can't have true freedom. Wouldn't work on our species and I don't think it ever will.

Myth once again. We do have freedom of speech and you won't get arrested for saying "the holocaust never happened". You will get opponents, get criticised etc. but you won't get arrested. Just look at the explosion of Sweden Democrat turd-box expose where high-up political Sweden Democrat people praised SS-troops, proclaimed themselves proud racists and attacked various minorities. They're not in jail, they were just exposed. "Hets mot folkgrupp" is nearly never used against an individual, it's basically there if things go too far and becomes a sort of open campaign.

True. On the lowest level we are driven by instincts over which we have little control = no real freedom. We're prisoners of our genetic structure and social upbringing/situation. The freedom we have is when we can use our cognitive abilities to bend the underlying currents of influence but even that is influenced by instincts and prejudice (we ALL have them no matter what you say, it's part of the human condition).

One thing I did find weird and restrictive while I was in Europe was not being able to drink on the streets. In Sweden I was in a bar with tables outside (it was summer) but they had to stop serving alcohol there after a certain hour, so I had to go inside. And you're not supposed to drink in parks either (which is madness if you ask me, such nice places and you can't drink wine with a girl or beer with a friend?!). Altough we did drink everywhere in midsummer Laughing

I also think it's strange to be able to smoke inside bars like in Germany, because that has been outlawed here many years ago, so I guess it's all just a matter of getting used to.

What really bothers me though is internet censorship, like countries who block the piratebay.
