|
 |
Ok I have some unexpected dosh (woo yay) and I want to upgrade my graphics card.
I dont want to spend more than 70 - 80 £ because #1. I am cheap and #2. Its nigh one Christmas, I have kids and the wife would kill me.
I currently have a GTS450 (vroom vroom) and I want something decent (ish)
I dont really want an AMD card because I dont only use Windows and fglrx is shite, but if something is out there that is so much better cost / performance wise I will consider it.
Suggestions welcome, I know nowt about modern day cards in my day a higher number was better

fglrx is just fine these days though?
I even dared to try Crossfire under Linux last winter =D
Didn't go well!

I used the latest fglrx about 4 weeks ago and had hassle, so I would rather avoid AMD unless it is something special.
Could have been my card though as its an old laptop, but I am very very wary with AMD's linux drivers.

That can't have lasted long, since with the GF2 Nvidia already had the GTS/Pro/Ultra/Ti/MX suffices
The different model numbers are nothing different, that's the same as those suffixes used to be.
Anyway, that is not worth spending 70-80 quid on. It's barely an upgrade, regardless of whether it's the 650, the R7 250 or any of their peers (like the 7750). You will gain maybe a few FPS, but nothing worth spending that money on.
For it to be worth it, you need to stretch your budget to 100 quid mate. There's a massive jump in performance from 80 to 100 quid for some reason. If you're not going beyond 80 quid, then keep that money and spend it on something else or find a used card. An R7 250 or 650 over your GTS 450 is just not worth it for that money, you're looking at low, single digit gains in most games.
The contenders between 90 and 100 quid:
- AMD 7790: http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/components/amdradeongraphicscards/amdhd7790series/11210-03-20g.html
- Nvidia 650 Ti: http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/components/nvidiageforcegraphicscards/nvidiagtx650tiseries/zt-61101-10m.html
- Nvidia 650 Ti Boost: http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/components/nvidiageforcegraphicscards/nvidiagtx650tiseries/426018336-2883.html
Instead, the above ones? Anywhere from 75 to 150% FPS gain across the board. Between those 3 it goes like 650 Ti Boost >= 7790 >> 650 Ti.
Comparison material to show what I mean:
- Your 450 vs 650: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/681?vs=609
- Your 450 vs 650 Ti: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/680?vs=609
- 7790 is only in the '13 charts unfortunately, but you can compare with a 7770 to see that that already is much more worth it

I actually remember the MX prefix, I got a Gforce 4 MX to upgrade my TNT2 was awesooooome.
I dont think I can stretch to 100£ :/ I will do some shopping around and if I cant find anything I will just stick with what I have then for now, I dont trust buying stuff like this second hand, its too dodgy.
Thanks for the advice, Imay just get a new HDD for my HTPC then

Buy a used card instead of new? Should be able to get a 650TI or something for that price then?

The thought had crossed my mind on raiding fleabay, but its too risky, I could end up with something faulty and I really cant afford that, I need something that is going to work for a year plus (atleast)

That's the way to go then Saner
It's just not worth it at 80 quid at the moment. Everything around that point is crap, whereas the stuff at 100 quid is pretty darn good.

Saner is a wise man, he is perfectly aware that HD porn has always the top priority, and the GTS450 is still perfectly able to run every video out there
