The Cat Lady

  • Official web page: LINK
  • Developer: HARVESTER GAMES
  • Genre: Adventure Horror
  • Released: 2012
  • Story/Description:
    Quote:

People call her the cat lady. Haggard and grim, Susan Ashworth is a cipher in her own life. Everyone thinks they know what she’s all about, but how can that be possible when even she doesn’t know? In a story that packs one emotional punch after the other, Harvester Games’ The Cat Lady melds story, gameplay, and atmosphere into a mental wrecking ball that will destroy your preconceptions about this woman and about how adventure games can provide insight into the deepest of human feelings. Its high level of gore will place it in the do-not-play column for some, but for everyone else even a few rough edges can easily be overlooked in this great piece of interactive storytelling.

edit: (a few words from myself)

all and all it's a story about a woman who killed herself and landed in a fucked up purgatory(the screen with pig heads). There she meets a fucked up queen of maggots that casts a "curse" on Susan that makes her immortal until 5 "parasites" (fucked up people) walk the earth. As Susan encounters these parasites, we get to experience the tragic and sad story of Susan Ashworth.

I can't believe this game doesn't have it's topic. It's amazing. It's one of a kind adventure. At first I thought the graphics would put me off but it turned out the other way around. I felt so connected to everything that happened on the screen. I'm not going to write more because I can't even express with words what I experienced. If you like adventure and highly atmospheric games, you must try it.

I'm yet to find a game similiar to this. If anyone has an idea, let me know Smile

It's a popular game, seems to have gotten very good criticism and feedback too. Smile

I've not played it myself however, just another adventure game in a long list of titles to play through when I can. Razz

edit: yeah, I was surprised i loved this game. I can't sit through a indie game more than 30 minutes. Mark of ninja, Bastion, Fez, Gunpoint... But The Cat Lady sucked me in so hard and won't let go Smile But that maybe because i'm addicted to atmosphere in games and I like adventure games.

haha Smile i was just like you guys.

A year ago, it was a snowy christmasy day and I just sat in front of a computer looking for something to play. I saw screenshots of this and I thought "Wtf is this ugly shit"... But I've decided to give it a try...

And it blew my mind.

I'm not forcing you to antyhing, but it's not really fair to judge an indie game from screens only. Did you at least see the trailer?

Not something I'd play either, but I'm watching a LP of it on YT and it's very good for a game of this type. The visuals are so ugly on purpose I think.

What the.. this game has an amazing story, perfect atmosphere, good voice acting, very good gameplay (as good as it gets in a point n clicky game) and it gets mocked because of odd graphics?

Edit:I could understand if i was a zealous fan of an otherwise mediocre game, but the game has got very good reviews. I dare you to find one that says this gake is shit -something youre implying. Unless its not what youre saying, then i'm sorry im not good in reading opinions in forms of emoticons

Good voice acting? Unless the preview video isn't an example of it. It sounds like they hired the high school drama club to do the voicing to me. Just start the video around 2:27 and listen.

Heck I was kinda interested until I heard the characters talk on the video. since it seems a story based game, the dialog is a big part. Its the main thing that made me go "whoaa..wait not getting that game"

I still think its pretty bad for an indie game. Sounds like it was just some roommates they gathered and a $5 radio shack desk mic overacting the lines too close to the mic.

I don't expect top of the line mixing and mastering in an indie game. But when your best effort sounds like someone on teamspeak painfully reading a script. maybe vocals should be left out of your game.
Just my 2 cents, don't expect anyone to agree. Just that detracted from it, and stood out as horribly bad in both acting and quality of the recording, more than it helped me get into the bits of the trailer video.

Yeah, i might be blinded by the love for the game. I've played it a year ago, and i just remembered that some dialogs were of worse quality than others ans i didnt like it.

Either way, the reviews speak for themselves. If you cant get past the looks, and you like adventure games youre missing a very good atmospheric story. I would too but i trusted the opinions and was really bored.. thank god Smile i just hope that by making thread i made someone aware of this game and that he'll appreciate it as much as i did Smile

I'm not really a story based games fan, but I was looking about two months ago for something different than the average shooters bs, and found this game on desura if I recall correctly.

I like puzzle games and point&click games so I gave this one a try. It looked pretty weird in the beginning regarding the art style and story but I kept going despite some of the shoddy voice acting. After two chapters I was totally into the game, not really complicated on the puzzle part of the game but the story was pretty strong and deep if you ask me, different from anything I played recently. In the end it was a great adventure and I'm glad I found this.

I guess I needed something like this to partially cure my game burnout. Razz

its not a adventure game , its more a Horror Gore Nonlinear Experience GOTY , its a game from the markers of "Downfall" another excellent horror gore experience

the story starts when a old Cat Lady cant live and ends her existence killing herself , but she awakens in a strange world there the Queen of Maggots Death gives her special powers to kill psychos that escaped from Hell and 9 lives of others to extend her quest of pain...

its a really unique game , i wish more games would be like this and be more brave to use themes like Gore , Cannibalism , Suicide , Lesbian Love, sculpting people into art using they own bodies [did i mention they are still alive] , killing pain though cutting yourself etc... this game really has some hardcore themes , some faint of hearth would say 'sick' themes
