I am assuming the shapes themselves are high resolution laser scans, so that is not a big deal (technology has been available for a while). The skin shader is remarkable, but we've seen similar results with CryEngine 3 and nVidia demos of their own. What really hurts this is the shadowing. "Slap" some ray tracing with a high resolution background image and you could produce a very difficult to spot CGI.
I'm completely blown away by that, it looks incredible, especially near the end where he turns up the sunlight and the skin textures take on that slight sheen. I'm incredibly impressed by the lighting too.

That reminds me of a complaint my fiancee had when I was playing the newest Tomb Raider- how come that when Lara has to climb the communications antenna and there is snow everywhere her nipples don't show

and it's a shame, because the older ones definitely had nipples
It's just a high precision scan. It's not modelled. Since the technology is pretty impressive, one scan captures data from multiple sources to capture a complete "moment" quickly. There is a lot information on the blog of the company. http://ir-ltd.net/blog/

I think some of the latest nVidia-demos of animated moving faces have been pretty good. The problem still is that even with the most recent technology body movement and skin texture is what really makes or breaks something. Having a model just stand completely still isn't impressive to me, and whilst some of these models look pretty good in certain lighting situations that impression to me gets a bit removed with the fact that they are completely motionless statues. And looking at the HD-render of them you see the artifacts and the slight blurring in the textures from the necessary compression needed.
Because these models do not move, and because of how unusable they would be in (for instance) a game, currently, they reflect little more to me than what might be possible to real-time render with motion capture some time in the future when a GeForce Titan is looked upon as an old and slow GFX-card.
Not quite that impressed. They can laser scan a body in 360*360 degrees (x*y) with incredible resolution, rebuild into a model, use awesome texturing and it will still ooze of non-realism. The one thing they still can't do properly = faces. A frozen face is an artificial or dead face. That's the #1 obstacle, to get realistic facial animation (and something that is being researched heavily, but it's so incredibly difficult since it's more than just simulating muscle movements, it has to correspond with how our brains interpret facial muscle changes).
Esp. the guy on left in the front looks particularly unreal. However, after all this nay-saying, it's very very well done and the women in the movie clip are twice or thrice as lifelike as the males for some reason. The males looks no more advanced than Cryteks modelling. The females though look more like actual holographic recordings.

but cmon. Exact same face is rendered in 3d in real time on pc. It looks the same as real face of the guy.
If this is not impressive, nothing will ever be. It cannot get more real than real.

There is nothing impressive about using 3d laser scanning since...forever. Now if they completely animated them, without dropping into the uncanny-valley, then it would be at least somewhat noteworthy.

But they can be used in the process of creating models for the game. AFAIK the new MGS game has had a tech demo prove the technology (only used for heads from what was shown) in that they use a 3d scan of the head to get a really high polycount model, and then use that to generate maps for the actual in game models. It's very similar to how Zbrush is used atm, and i guess it's a more time efficient substitute for that, considering the artist doesn't have to model everything from scratch.
I agree with you when it comes to using the models as is, but i think this has the potential to raise the bar when it comes to trying to achieve photorealistic characters inside a game environment.

Well, that's the problem. It's not real, it's a digital reproduction lacking any sign of life. We're not there yet and won't be for quite a while, esp. not on entertainment basis.
Someone predicted that in the future we'd see new movies with Marilyn Monroe, Cary Grant and so on. Well, it may be possible in the future to create perfect illusions of these dead actors and actresses but it would only be interesting out of a novelty point of view.
I guess the Japanese WOULD find the clip as interesting as you or even more so since they have the most advanced human robot appearance research in the world, are used to virtual stars and so on. Or they'd become disappointed that the reproductions in that clip lacks something essential, namely the very thing they try to create in Japan: lifelike personality and expression.
THIS is convincing:
(ps. the girl on the left does not exist but is a computer amalgamation of several different persons).
The Young Turks did a report on this group AKB 48:

WEll that is a good point. THat's why L.A noire was like it was. immersion is broken by the feeling that this is someones recorded face.
As far as real face animation goes, I will always remember how huge step forward HL2 was
