The script for Fight Club 2: Project Mayhem is going through the final touches. Jim Uhls, executive writer states, “I always knew we had to follow up. Follow up with something huge." He went on to say, “I gave Chuck [Palahniuk] a call last year, and he loved the idea! We got working right away."

Director for the upcoming film, David Fincher, has confirmed that Edward Norton will be returning for the sequel, as well as Helena Bonham Carter. Brad Pitt was also hinted in being involved with the film but nothing is confirmed yet.

Filming will take place in Los Angeles, CA this October, with a tentative theater release in late 2013.

When we caught up with Chuck Palahniuk he explained, “The first film didn’t focus enough on Project Mayhem, which I feel is one of the essential parts in telling this story. For the last film, I almost had no input. For this one, they’re giving me the ball, and letting me run with it. This will show a whole different side to ‘Fight Club’ through a series of flashbacks from our narrator. You won’t be disappointed."

Other rumored names to return for the sequel are Jared Leto and Meatloaf.

If the first two rules of Fight Club are "Don't talk about Fight Club," then Chuck Palahniuk broke them both when he attended SDCC last week. The author was one of the guests on a book-themed panel called "Ode to Nerds," along with fellow novelists Austin Grossman, Patrick Rothfuss, and several others. It was there that he made the unexpected announcement that a Fight Club sequel is in the works.

However, that sequel won't be in the form of a new novel, or a follow-up to the popular 1999 film adaptation starring Brad Pitt and Edward Norton. Instead, Palahniuk is planning a comic book series to continue the misadventures of disaffected narrator "Jack" and his fiery alter ego, Tyler Durden. Palahniuk clarified the announcement today on his official fan website, The Cult:

About the graphic novel, it's true. Chelsea Cain has been introducing me to artists and creators from Marvel, DC and Dark Horse, and they're walking me through the process. It will likely be a series of books that update the story ten years after the seeming end of Tyler Durden. Nowadays, Tyler is telling the story, lurking inside Jack, and ready to launch a come-back. Jack is oblivious. Marla is bored. Their marriage has run aground on the rocky coastline of middle-aged suburban boredom. It's only when their little boy disappears, kidnapped by Tyler, that Jack is dragged back into the world of Mayhem. It will, of course, be dark and messy. Due to contract obligations it can't come to light for a while. Next year is "Beautiful You," followed by the story collection. But since the Fight Club sequel will appear serialized in graphic form, my book publisher might allow me to launch it earlier than 2015.

For those who might have seen the movie but not read the novel, the two stories are generally similar until their respective climaxes. Whereas the movie ends with Durden's Project Mayhem cult successfully blowing up several buildings, wrecking America's financial system, and presumably sparking complete social anarchy, Durden is stopped in the original story when Jack shoots himself in the brain and wakes up in a mental institution. The novel ends with Jack encountering several hospital employees who reveal themselves as Project Mayhem members waiting for Durden's inevitable return.

Based on Palahniuk's comments, we're not expecting this Fight Club sequel to materialize anytime soon. For now, let us know your thoughts on this announcement and what artists you'd like to see Palahniuk collaborate with by posting in the comments section below.

Why so? It's just a confirmation that the sequel will come. We've got no other information.

Edit: I mean, no date or anything.
