I still remember someone told me Risen 2 was RPG of the year and I should try it. Waste of bandwidth to even torrent it.

Ye, Risen 2 was a mistake. Risen 1 was significantly better, though I'd argue that one too failed to fully capture the magic the previous Gothic games have. With the exception of G3, which needed like three years worth of community patches to turn out well.

See, while I wouldn't bash Risen 1, I don't understand what is good about it and why people are singing praises about it.
I really liked the utility spells, the academy quest-line was pretty interesting, but that really is about all I can remember that was good about that game.

well risen 1 had a great atmosphere, awesome music and the combat was pretty much like the one in gothic 1+2

I really liked Risen and I liked Risen 2 even more.
Ok, they're not Gothic (my favorite) - but for world immersion and exploration, they're pretty much second to none compared to other modern RPGs.

I didn't even waste bandwidth on Risen 2, Risen 1 was fun though, even if it had its problems.

Risen 2 had a huge potential but the several terribly wrong gameplay design decisions (yes combat system, I'm looking at you ) + rough feel overall and the usual bugs ruined everything.
Still, despite that, I kinda enjoyed it , at least there's the usual freedom and after some hours the new skills make it more challenging and add more variety. If they actually manage to polish it, restoring Risen 1's good combat and adding naval battles that don't suck, then I'm interested...I would have preferred the old setting though.

I liked Risen 2, finished it thrice and enjoyed each playthrough. At least they wanted to change the formula a bit; Risen 1,whilst great, was basically Gothic with a different setting. Only thing that disappointed me was the end boss battle. I mean that jumping puzzle from Risen 1 was harder . "Raaaagh, kneel before me, worm, for I am a powerful Titaaaaarrrrrghhhh...no,no, don't stab/shoot/voodo curse me Mr. Overpowered Pirate Person"
Still, I really hope Gothic 4 will be their next project. There's room for another great story in Myrtana or the Southern Isles.
( "What's that? There was a fourth game you say? What was it called? Oh, I'm sorry, do speak clearly...I simply cannot understand you with my hand around your throat" )

Risen 2 had lots of problems, many of them mentioned, but I felt the weakest part of the game was the world design. Gothic 1, 2 and 3 all had excellent and interesting game worlds that really added to the games. In no other games have exploring been that much fun. On the other hand, Risen 2's game world was bland and boring. Risen 1's wasn't all that good either, but it was a fair bit better than the sequel's.
That's not to say they didn't look good, quite the contrary, but they just didn't have that same oomph as the previous games.

They remade G2 at least, its the first risen.
Risen was on part with G2. Smaller world but way more interesting than bland G3 IMO. Nice little surprises and caves/dungeons/ruins etc to find. I hadn't been sucked into an RPG like that in years.

After Risen 2, I expect crap. This studio will never be properly managed. I don't know what magic happened during the dev of Risen 1, but they completely lost it with Risen 2.

yep i don't see them turn out a masterpiece ala gothic 2 again and risen 2 while far from bad suffered hugely due to the stupid broken combat system and well the amount of ungodly annoying bugs

If they're going to stick with the same theme as Risen 1 and 2 they really need to deliver what most people would expect from a pirate themed game. Ships that you can actually sail would be a start, as well as ship combat. The islands in Risen 2 were also largely the same. If they had an open world with ships and islands that reflected the locations of Gothic 1 and 2, I couldn't see it being a bad thing.
They talked up Risen 2 far too much before release and it wasn't all that great, so if it is just more of the same then they're not going to have much luck winning back the confidence of fans from their previous games.
