The streaming service has picked up Mindhunter, a second drama series from House of Cards creator David Fincher, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
Originally developed at HBO via Fox 21, the project hails from Fincher and Charlize Theron's Denver and Delilah banner. Joe Penhall (The Road) will pen the script for Netflix, with Fincher and Theron on board to executive produce.
Sources tell THR that Theron had the rights to the book and WME, which reps the actress-producer, set her up with Fincher (Seven, Zodiac). The drama has been four years in the making. Fincher is set to direct.
The drama is based on the 1996 book Mind Hunter: Inside the FBI's Elite Serial Crime Unit by John Douglas and Mark Olshanker.
Douglas spent decades developing criminal-profiling techniques for the FBI and teamed with writer Olshanker for the story of his 25-year career tracking down serial killers.
Mindhunter comes as the streaming service continues to be aggressive in pursuing original scripted programming toward its goal of launching a new series every week. The project arrives as true-crime tales have become all the rage following the success of HBO's The Jinx.
Lights Out‘s (the boxing movie) Holt McCallany has been cast as the lead in “Mindhunter,” Netflix’s crime drama series executive produced by David Fincher and Charlize Theron, Deradline reports. This marks a reunion with Fincher, his director in Alien3 and Fight Club!
Written by playwright Joe Penhall and Scott Buck, “Mindhunter” is based on the 1996 book “Mind Hunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit,” by former special agent John Douglas and Mark Olshaker, which goes behind the scenes of some of Douglas’ highest-profile cases, including the man who hunted prostitutes in Alaska, the Atlanta child murderer, and Seattle’s Green River killer.
“Set in 1979, the TV series centers on the inquisitive and skilled FBI Agent Bill Tench (McCallany). Along with fellow serial killer investigator in the behavioral science unit, FBI agent Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff), Tench interviews serial killers to help them solve current murders.”
Co-starring in the series is Anna Torv as a psychologist.

When actors turn into producers ... every movie Charlize Theron produced was great this far ... from Monster for which she got a Oscar ,to Young Adult ...
Feels a lot like Zodiac (2007), but with potential to be much better in the character and story development department given the different format (TV series).
Yeah, the releases at the moment leave a bit to be desired when it comes to image quality, they're watchable but Fincher deserves better, proper 1080p at least.
I went through the first episode anyway and found it captivating and promising. It's very dialogue heavy, and it practically functions as an introductory chapter for the (naive) protagonist, immersed in an authentic, vintage and creepy context that is reminiscent of Zodiac. I'm completely hooked already, but I think I'll wait and see if some quality versions will pop up *soon* (not sure I'll be able to resist though).
