So i got a HD7950 Twin Frost 3 from Amazon, gave blue lines, 95c under load, crashing after some stress tests etc.... Returned it to amazon, now waiting for a refund.

Meanwhile im back at square one, with another sad story with Ati...

Ive read so many good things about this card, but also horror story and i have one under my belt. I would love to get another one and get a good one this time but i dont know... RMAing a card is expensive from here (40 Shipping to me, Then 40 Shipping back for the RMA... THEN 40 more on the new card.... fuck)

Any tips on what to choose from this list?

- 660 TI (How is it OCing?)
- Another 7950 from Gigabyte
- Or a sacrifice to get a 670?

It has nothing to do with AMD, you ordered a card from MSI is what the problem is.

If you're going AMD, stick with those who've been around the longest. Sapphire > Visiontek > Diamond

If you're going nVidia, stick with evga

I usually go to newegg and i buy the ones with most reviews and most ratings, since those mean positive results. Sadly the Twin Frost thing died and in case i get another 7950, i was thinking Gigabyte since i read its goody. Or is it?

Why would it cost 40 shipping for rma?

Couldn't you just get Amazon to do a replacement rather then messing about if that card also had issues then you need to look at your system as the problem not the card.

MSI has a bad history. No one's buying their motherboards anymore because they keep catching on fire. Let alone them being able to get decent working video cards.

Gigabyte is alright. but as I said, if you're going to get an AMD card, get Sapphire, then Visiontek, then Diamond

Had Sapphire AMD cards since the x1950 pro, NEVER EVER had a single problem with them (while my nvidia cards that got replaced by the Sapphire ones did cause problems nonstop).

So either you are really unlucky with AMD hardware (like me with nvidia), or like the rest says, it has to do with the company you got the card from (donno what the english word for it is Razz)

Plus keep in mind, Sapphire gives you gold membership for their site, mich means you can participate into quite frequent giveaways of games and such (you can't enter most with just silver membership). That's always a nice plus, still getting value out of buying a Sapphire card 6 years ago with this Very Happy

Check where i live, i gotta ship to miami and from miami i payed 40 for the video card to come to me, then to send it back to the store it was 40 more. Crying or Very sad

Also i tested switching the 7950 with my old card (GTX 260) everything worked fine, put the 7950 back, problems again.

Ill check the saphire ones along with the Gigabyte's

I would just swap the 7950 to a same working one. It beats overclocked even GTX 680 these days with the new drivers. You had just extremely bad luck by receiving dead card.

Im in a paranoid status.... every card i read reviews about in newegg and amazon i see Damaged reports, lol.

Im stuck, between another 7950 (Im liking the gigabyte one because of the cooler, but i kind of wanna go sapphire for security...) or a 670 or 660TI, but im so scared right now ill have to keep reading until i can decide.

+1 most ppl buy the card, install it , and play games. all the frustrated people who got a broken card or dont know how to properly install it give it 1 out of 5 stars cause thats how they vent to the world.

DrXtreme: 4 out of 5 eggsRating: 4/5Update to my review from 7/28/2010 for the ASUS P6X58D Premium

Pros: Well Documented BIOS compared to many other boards. Can use SATA 3 along with SATA 6 and IDE channels. 2 USB Ports.
I must apologize to Asus for slamming them in my review on 7/28/2010. They did not deserve that, so I want to go on the record publicly offering an apology for diss'ing them.

They have now worked with me to help me figure attempt to figure out this memory issue. I have contacted my memory supplier and tried every setting they recommended - none worked. Only manually setting the BIOS to 1066 MGHz for RAM allowed the board to show 8 Gigs of the 12 installed.

Cons: There is NO definitive way to confirm a memory controller failure. I have ran Intel's CPU diagnostics and it fails at the same point every time with no indication of why. I ran Memtest. I have ran every memory and CPU test I can buy or download with no luck. I now have the RTM version of Piriform's Speccyand between it and CPUz I truly believe this is a failing Memory Controller that is ON Die of the CPU, but I have no way to confirm this. Speccy shows I have 6 slots, with 6 slots populated, but only 4 slots reporting. I can put any ram from the QVL list in those slots alone and the system won't post. I have been trying to work with Intel, but that is like trying to communicate with someone who won't answer the phone at times.

Other Thoughts: I REALLY Wish I would have bought a 6 core AMD and an MSI or Gigabyte board now. I have over 9 grand into this system and feel like I could have ordered a Dell Studio for 1200 and had as strong a performer. I know this board when the memory issue is resolved will be a killer!! Benchmarks are great for what I have, Only thing that really needs to be changed is the 2nd PCI-E 16 lane slot needs to be farther down to allow the Vid cards to breath better.[/u]

Mine is the 7950 from gigabyte and it's pretty good. I can't hear the fans at 25%~30% (non-gaming) and it's still quiet enough under heavy use.

Its strange how different the prices are..
I could get this one:
http://www.amazon.com/Gigabyte-Mini-Displayport-PCI-Express-Graphic-GV-R795WF3-3GD/dp/B007581QHG

or this one:
http://www.amazon.com/GIGABYTE-WINDFORCE-PCI-Express-Graphics-GV-N66TOC-2GD/dp/B008UG2W20

for the same price here (270€)
still cant decide but now the hd 7950 is supposed to be as fast or faster than a gtx 670

please note:
- not gonna overclock much
- not gonna play above 1080p
- 4xMSAA is enough

(these things alleviate the shortcomings of the 660ti a bit)

so should I get the Radeon?

7950 is faster , sometimes by a little , sometimes by a wide margin

No this doesnt convince me yet.
In some game benchmarks the 7950 is faster, in some the 660 TI is faster, even with the new Catalyst drivers.
But on average those cards seem to perform the same.
And not to forget that the 660 TI I can get for the same price as the 7950 is also overclocked, and nets on average 5-7 fps more than the regular GTX 660 TI used in the techpowerup tests.
Only when there is very high resolutions and high MSAA settings, the AMD cards clearly have an edge - but these are not settings I will play with.
However the HD 7950 is supposed to be more future proof right?
No memory bus limitations and an additional 1gb vram could make the difference when the first true next gen games are going to turn up in 2014?
If they perform the same, I will stay with nvidia, because I prefer their drivers and the exclusive features (TXAA,FXAA, Physx).

There are loads of issues with the MSI 7950 and 7970 cards, AMD isn't to blame for the low manufacturing and quality control standards of MSI. I'd get another 7950 from a decent manufacturer like Gigabyte or Sapphire, and avoid MSI products in the future.
