Hello my fellow humpers
so my wife vought me a 680 gtx for xmas, bringing my system up to scratch.
currently running an i7 2600k 8 gig of dominator ram, win7 64 bit and now a shiny 680gtx (2gig) run everything at 1920x 1080 (my monitors default)
been frantically installing all my old resource hogging games and maxing them out. Now, I have no yard stick with which to measure my performance, but some games seem a bit .....slow
for example I installed gta4, put everything on high and have an average of 60 fps in the benchmark. but in the benchmark results my cpu usage is at 30% and gpu @ around 48%. I can change all the settings and the bench results stay the same
also installed stalker cop (with complete) and with everything max it runs between 40 and 80 fps
should games be running like mega quick?
just a general enquiry, any input appreciated

in my post xmas day exitement i had put the goddam 680 into the 4x pcie slow like a total twat bracket! lol fixed it now, but Im concerned about heat
(680 idle temps) bout 40 idle and 70 load, am I being paranoid but is that too hot? I know they can go to like 85 but what bothers me is this;
below is a crude picture of my airflow
green: gpu
reds: fans (the one under the gpu is one of this icy cooler double fan things)
black: other componants
seems ok right?
I installed a hefty 120mm fan on the side panel blowing directly onto the gpu, the temps...stayed the same. oh and fyi I have great cable management, they are all fed behind the casing mostly, nothing is blocking airflow. What does concern me is the cases other vents for possible fancs are just kinda open, is this causing bad pressure or something?
anyone know why?

Sounds fine to me, not ideal temps and you wont get any overclock out of it but the card wont get damaged. The airflow looks fine but the 120 fan is probably just fucking with the air flow, those side fans are never going to provide much additional cooling.

As syn said, those side fans barely do anything nice. They're usually put on there for looks to sell moe because MOAR FANS. They're good for fucking up the natural airflow of how you have the other fans. Imagine a car getting slammed from the side by a train.
Believe it or not but Crysis is still an amazing game to test hardware on. Metro2033, Batman Arkham series, World in Conflict, DOW2

just poking around the interweb http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/geforce-gtx-680-review-benchmark,3161-17.html seems my system is running the same temps but underload its actually not even reaching 70

The temps seem quite normal for a reference card. Although idle does seem a bit higher than I would have expected. If you have a multi-monitor setup, perhaps in this case Nvidia cards idle at higher clocks as well (like AMD cards do)?
Either way, I wouldn't concern myself with idle temps too much. 70 under load for reference is great.
Have you tried removing those coolers under the GPU? If the temps go much higher on the GPU without them, then I'd say something is wrong.

future reference if you're looking for good reviews, don't go to toms or anandtech, they're notorious for fluffing benchmarks.
Also, fuck the warranty but the stock paste they use on the GPU usually isn't that great. I replaced my 5850's with AC5 and it dropped 5C!!! I just bought some shinetsu which kicks AC5's ass so I'm waiting to see what the temps are on that.

just seems wierd that with a 120mm fan blowing right on it also it it the same temp.
meh.....maybe its the case

I think the key is to have an even balance of airflow.. ie. X CFM in == X CFM out, preferably from front to back since hot air rises.

What would be a good source for reviews and benchmarks these days then?

As we've said, that fan will probably be making it worse. What kind of air is coming through that fan? When its inside the case where is it going?
Throwing air at something isn't going to cool it, you need to use that air to remove heat which requires a good flow throughout the case. Its likely that the fan is breaking that air flow and causing heat to remain static within the case increasing both the internal temps and the component temps.
