|
 |
So, here I was browsing some performance videos. You know, to see if and how well a game runs on a specific hardware (normally GPUs). When I encounter a jewel like this:
Quote: | With Fraps = 22 FPS
Without Fraps = 40 FPS |
Yeah, seems legit.
Now, I know Fraps can indeed impact the performance of a game, but the thing is, this is obviously not the case, because since I share the same hardware as the one in this specific video, I fucking know for a fact that the specific game doesn't reach 40 FPSs.
So, my gripe is: people that claim to have better FPSs, when they're not recording. Because it's bullshit.
Edit: typo.

Before I had my SSD, and recorded from/to the same disk i played my games and had my os on, there was quite a big performance hit in terms of fps when I hit that recording button. Specially in games that were heavy on the hd streaming(rage comes to mind)
That aside, a 45%(give or take) Decrease in fps seems odd , why would people lie about the fps's theyre getting though?

Yeah, there are games that when recording, the FPS are sucked away.
But what I'm referring to are those with low-end PCs, saying they can run the games at a higher FPS count than what their videos shows.
Another example: a few years ago, I remember this dude who recorded GTA IV at around 13 FPSs, and claimed that it was due to Fraps, because according to him, without it he could run the game with high settings, at around 35 FPS. Yeah right. With the same PC, low settings plus a few tweaks all I could reach was 20 FPS.

as mast pretty much indicated, the lower end the pc the higher your perfomance impact is going to be. Also what is your definition of same hardware? having the same cpu/gpu doesnt make your system identical to his.
but again, unless this guy was recording full HD on/to a single hd a 22fps difference seems steep

I could easily lose around 20fps back when I did some test recordings while playing BC2.
It all seems perfectly plausible to me.
Also, GTA IV is not the best game to compare performance |
Let me put it this way: it's impossible to run GTAIV, on high setting maintaining a FPS of 35, on that PC. Simple as that.
It's not the performance loss I'm criticizing, but when they claim their PC can run the game simply miles above what the hardware can handle.
What if I record a game on my old P3, post it on Youtube, and say: with Fraps = 3 FPS. Without Fraps = 25 FPS. It's the obvious bullshit of this kinda of videos I'm talking about.
Even worse are those that actually speed up the video to 30 or 60 FPS, then claiming they can run it at that speed.

Oh, it was exactly the same hardware. As in, same laptop model, down to the same OS.
And full HD? Nope. 800x600. Same HDD? I guess so.

When I record with fraps, I record at 24fps so my fps always drops down to and locks at 24fps during the recording
Best way for me to record fps is with an external camera pointed at the monitor

But You can select the fps you want to record in though - so why not increase it?

The size of the file gets way too large

that is "with fraps" while recording.
Just having the onscreen fps meter don't consume anything

SteamDRM-"Call of Duty is the symbol of the true perfection in every aspect. Call of Duty games are like Mozart's/Beethoven's symphonies"

I currently have a 1hr 26min long recording of 1080p footage in 30 fps, it's 144 gb. Power of lagarith codec for dxtory. I can't remember what the 60fps footage I had before had in size but there's no reason to record at 60 fps for me unless I do slow mo stuff. You really should try out dxtory. |
Is that codec also compatible with Sony Vegas?

League of Legends, without fraps ~400 fps, with recording on ~90 fps, on an i7-2600k...
So even on high end hardware, it still drops by miles.
