I'm shopping for a new SSD. I was thinking 256GB Vertex 4 but I can't seem to find it in stock here :/
Are there some better/equal alternatives? Or should I keep looking for vertex 4. I'm mainly concerned with loading/boot and program start-up times. I heard vertex has good IOps count but there are much better alternatives as far read speed goes, although I'm not sure what kind of impact would that have in real-world scenario.

I hope to do a new pc build after this summe and essentially want 64gb ssd for System/applications partition.
Right now I have wd500cavair and I have 20gb partitioned for C. its more than enough for windows7 and programs, so 64gb ssd will be a blast right ?
64gb ssd's aren't so expensive and there is no point getting more for system partition i think
128gb ssd are quite expensive for a hdd... I can have 2tb WD black for that

Mine is about a year old and 27gigs. And that's not counting anything in app data or essential stuff stored in program files...But yeah I think 64GB should be enough. My current one is 128GB and I always have about 30GB free, and that's with some games and larger apps on it.

i know. why the facepalm ?
I want ssd for C: partition. That means all the system files, applications and maybe some games but rather not.
If I will be able to afford 128b then why not

Just got a 128 GB M4. One of the best buys I ever made, along with the GTX 580.

Likewise with the M4, I've had it for little over a month and wow...I'm thinking of getting another one and setting it up in raid or using it for games.

Naw, prices are still on the epic-high side. The 1TB WD Caviar Black is £109 right now, which is £15 *more* than I paid for mine a year and a half ago.

What happened to the drive? Ive noticed that when SSDs start giving you shitty speeds, you can actually restore them to their original factory state exactly like day 1. Its called doing a secure erase in a Linux based OS called parted Magic. It did wonders for me.
Not sure about the technical details about how it works. But I believe it actually wipes out all traces of any electromagnetic footprint on your drive, fully restoring it back to day 1

No real need to RAID them but yeh, I'd like another one, bigger size, preferably 512mb just for games.
I do intend to buy a 64gb for my ps3. Should really boost some games over the crappy stock hdd.
Btw, I grabbed my 128 M4 for 122$, is that a bargain really?

Not sure you mean. SSDs wear out in time, don't they? It doesn't last forever.

your post comes out as very ignorant to say the least. what are your arguments?
I also went with 830 just like original poster and am extremely happy with it. M4 is cheaper but also pretty old now and slower than sammy 830 or intel 520.

Surprisingly no. This idea may seem strange to you but the actual physical hardware does not wear out. There are no moving parts inside your drive, how would it wear out. A lot of these SSD performance problems result from poor communication with your sata controller which results in problems with TRIM and other garbage collecting issues.
Everybody here must think I am full of shit and I am talking out of my ass right now. But if you have a SSD lying around giving terrible benchmark results, I want you to try this. Benchmark the affected drive. Then get Parted Magic and do a secure erase. Then benchmark the drive again. Come back and post your results, I guarantee (and mark my words) your drive will be restored back to day 1

Wherever the problem came from, the performance can be restored back to its original factory state by doing a secure erase on the drive.

you are talking about TRIM and garbage collection. but there's also physical degradation with SSDs over time due to writes. you can't restore that with erasing.

No, but to get to the point where you've really run out of cycles on the flash cells you really have to butcher the drive continuously for several years.
