short on money and drive space a buddy brought a 1TB external drive ( bottom pic ) that he doesnt use anymore. i wanted to check with HDtune for any errors and i got the warning for "reallocated sector count". check my other internal drives and my 640gb and 1tb show same warning. i googled but i got mixed opinions. some say get rid of them asap. some say HD can handle a certain amount of relocated sectors. wonders what experience you guys have with this. i know only 100% solution is replacing but i cant atm. if situation is really bad i can disconnect them to avoid wear and tear till financial situation improves. For the 640gb i did a full error scan which took 2 hours and gave me zero broken sectors ( all green ) ill test the other ones when im home again.

On the laptop that I sent back a few weeks ago (bought in september) that was the main culprit according to CrystalDiskInfo, which also displayed the drive status as critical. The disk failed completely shortly after.

Can't remember the exact value displayed in CDI, though

Some few sectors being unstable is probably not a huge issue for a modern HDD when it's reached a few years lifetime but if they start increasing rapidly then the drive is definitively failing and I'd guess it needs to be replaced quickly before crashing completely.
