Hi guys. I got myself a new 100mbit down 20mbit up contract over the old 30mbit.

I am getting 90mbit speeds over cable but cant go apst 22mbit with my 801n 150mbps wifi router tp-link no matter what.

My pc is quite far away from router so I could understand poor speeds, but even when I take my old notebook close to router I still get 22mbit over wifi and full speed on cable.

Now: My pc have dlink g adapter. and I guess that this old notebook also have old g wifi.

Those g supports up to 54mbps so why I am getting only 20?
I could get new n adapter for my pc in few days but christmass is coming so my budget is tight

Because 54 Mbps is only a theoretical maximum speed (there's some networking overhead that already costs you a few megabits) and when the signal is weak it will dynamically slow down to a lower bitrate for data integrity. 20 Mbps for a G network at a distance is not that bad really.

Yes, you need a new 802.11n compliant adapter if you want speeds faster than 54 Mbps.

Yea, a N adapter to get better speeds.
You probably will only get around 50-60 with the N under best conditions too.

more than 22mbps Wink

Cable connected directly into pc gets full speed.

wified it gets 22mbits on g adapter.

get ANY n adapter (cheper better) or maybe other solution, like ethernet card with anthena ?

Why not just use the cable? its always faster.
and if its a PC, id say get the pci(e) card type myself.

but whats the point of having 100mb if you use wifi N and cap yourself at around 50ish using wifi? Razz

cable is a no go. I just don't want to hassle with it. Will see what speeds i will achieve with new solution for pc wifi. Either a dongle or pci card.

If its above 50, I will be all happy. 5mb/s vs 2mb/s wins easily for steam downloading Razz

I am not playing games over multiplayer too much so latency was never an issue for me

Well, most of the time getting an external antenna is a better solution as external antennas are, in general, better than internal antennas.

Pros :
- better at signal reception
- you can position external antenna usually 1 - 1.5 m (depends on cable length) from your PC case

Cons :
- you need a place to put external antenna
- prone to damage (either antenna or cable)

Maybe you could extend USB 802.11n adapter with an USB extension cable.

Here in my local shop USB 802.11n adapter costs 10 € and a PCI 802.11n card with an external antenna costs 15 €.
