Tales of Maj'Eyal (ToME) is an open-source, single-player, tactical role-playing roguelike and action game set in the world of Eyal.

This is the Age of Ascendancy, after over ten thousand years of strife, pain and chaos the known world is at last at relative peace. The Spellblaze last effects are now tamed, the land slowly heals itself and the civilisations rebuild themselves after the Age of Pyre.

It has been one hundred and twenty two years since the Allied Kingdoms have been established under the rule of Toknor and his wife Mirvenia. Together they ruled the kingdoms with fairness and brought prosperity to both halflings and humans. The King died of old age fourteen years ago, and his son, Tolak, is now king.

The elven kingdoms are quiet. The Shaloren elves in their home of Elvala are trying to make the world forget about their role in the Spellblaze and are living happy lives under the leadership of Aranion Gayaeil. The Thaloren elves keep to their ancient tradition of living in the woods, ruled as always by Nessilla Tantaelen the wise.

The dwarves of the Iron Throne have started a careful trade relationship with the Allied Kingdoms for nearly one hundred years, yet not much is known about them, not even their leader.

While the people of Maj'Eyal know that the mages helped put an end to the terrors of the Spellblaze, they also did not forget that it was magic that started those events. As such mages are still shunned from society, if not downright hunted down. Still, this is a golden age, civilizations are healing the wounds of thousands of years of conflict, even the humans and the halflings have made lasting peace.

You are an adventurer, looking for old powers, treasure and glory. You boldly go in lost and forgotten places, untamed forests and sealed ruins. What will you find in this age of supposed peace ?

* Multiplayer: No
* System requirements: Windows/Linux/Mac OSX

So, another roguelike, been out for a long time already, but development is still strong (new version out today).

A lot of classes (you start with 5 I think, but you'll unlock more as you play) and there isn't that many 'classical' roguelike deaths awaiting. But a lot is about tactics and playing intelligently.

TOME is one of my favourite roguelikes. I consider it close in quality to Adom and Dungeon Crawl. The default module is really good.

I've been playing this intensively in the last 2 weeks... hands-down best roguelike I've ever played. Don't be fooled by the graphics, the mechanics are well thought-out and pretty complex, with a multitude of (unlockable) races and classes.

New expansion today!

What is inside ?

So many things! If you think a whole new campaign is great wait until you learn that you get 3 new races to play the campaign with:

the Orcs (obviously!), fighting for the very survival of their race; the Kruk pride is all that is left
the Yetis, well kinda! An orc mind in a powerful yeti's body!
the Whitehooves, of which I will only say the name Wink

What would be a Tales of Maj'Eyal expansion without new classes? Good thing you'll also get 3 new classes:

All of which are part of the Tinker metaclass:

learn to maw down your foes as a Sawbutcher, dual wielding steam-powered saws to bring hot steamy mayhem to your foes!
become a master Gunslinger, filling your foes with bullets fired by your steam-powered guns; be elusive, be evasive, fire away and be awesome!
merge machine and mind with the Psyshot, of which I will not speak any more Wink

But what would be a good tinker without items to improve and craft ? Nothing!

All tinker classes (and all other classes can learn) start with the ability to craft powerful items to improve their equipment. Do you need to run fast? strap Rocket Boots to your shoes! Do you need a quick heal? Inject a Healing Salve directly into your bloodstream! Do you love fire and flames? Strap an Incendiary Groove to your weapon!

There are over 70 crafts to choose and use.

Nice... I think TOME is severely under-appreciated. It's an excellent roguelike, with very deep gameplay mechanics and great replayability.

I still love it as much as I did back in 2011 (one of my earlier posts in this thread). TOME is one of the best roguelikes in my opinion.

I've owned it for a while and I think they've pushed out various expansions too but maybe that was some type of early-access.

EDIT: Ah I missed the "embers of rage" part, another expansion then I take it.

Oh and yeah 1500+ achievements, SAM struggled a bit with that but it worked. Razz
