I woke up this morning and tried to start my PC and it didn't start. No lights, no fans, no nothing. Resetting the CMOS and then trying to boot the fans and LEDs start for a split second and then shut off. I'm guessing it's either the mobo or PSU. I'll try get hold of another PSU later and test my PC with it. In the meanwhile, does anyone have any advice? Thanks!

Nothing happened at first...
You reset the CMOS.
It got a mild jolt of power in to the system, then died.

Take it completely apart, then put the motherboard, graphics card, cpu & ram back in and try to power up. If that works, add your system disk..

Do you mean take apart as in disconnect the wires, reseat the ram and whatnot or actually take apart the case and remove the cpu from the mobo? If the latter then I don't really see what purpose that would serve.

The first alternative... I mean, it could be anything from a dead CPU, shorted/dead mobo, faulty PSU to a shorted PCIe-port. Rip out all the cables, cards, reseat RAM modules, connect only the most rudimentary to see if it gets any power.

Well damn! Did what you suggested and had no success. I'm gonna borrow a friend's PSU and see what happens.

EDIT: It's the darn PSU. Computer started fine with another PSU. Luckily the PSU is still under warranty.

It s probably the capacitors for the secondary power circuit on the psu, thats the one thats always on and powers lan and the power button on the board. Are the lan lights on?.

Have u tried to pump the power button while u re PSU is off, that can empty some capacitors on the board.

My advice would be in future to buy the best PSU Enermax(power 100% more than ure power requarements are) and Gigabyte or Asus motherboards(they have all the protections and will not shortout).

I had a Gigabyte board that survived a direct thunderbolt strike, and another time a shorted graphic card. Asus has the same protections on their boards but they cost more.

Well I already sent it to Corsair and they'll be shipping me a newer model since they no longer make the VX550. Smile

I had this issue when I didn't properly place and screw the motherboard in the case, as soon as I would turn it on, it would shut down.

Check the screws and see if it is properly placed in there, although in your case it might have to do with the PSU.

Erm if the mobo works fine with another PSU then it obviously is not the mobos fault... Also google turns up a few exact cases with my specific PSU model.
