So I just installed the new card, clean driver install and all.
However when enterting BF3 I'm getting not as good performance as I'd want, meaning that it's barely noticeable over my Gtx 570.

Now I also see that the card underclocks itself when not running 3D applications but jumps up to like 1000 when playing BF3 (and stays there).
I'm basically wondering if there's something I have to do first or tweak it so to say...

Anyone have any idea what it could be?

I'm running the latest beta drivers 306.02.

Not your CPU limiting? CPU counts for alot in BF3.

Well, I thought about that as well but then I checked while playing and it went up as high as 93% for a very brief period of time. Usually it's between 75-85% of usage.
It's a Phenom 970BE @ 4Ghz.

I'm going to try the asus tweak thingie as well as go back to the whql drivers to see if that helps. Surprised

Well i'm almost sure it's your CPU limiting you in BF3 then. Wink

How? o.O

Unless I'm missing something I wouldn't call 75-85% usage bottlenecking the system.... o.O

I have been trying to find it on the interwebz, but can't find it.
It doesn't have to do with just the % usage you see on the CPU, but other things aswell (things that i cannot explain tho.)

I don't know how much or even if BF3 makes use of tessellation but the tessellation/compute engine in the 6x0-series has been gimped pretty severe compared to the 5x0-series so that may be one factor. Perhaps there's some changes with the geometry instancing as well. Just guesses on my part.

Something does sound iffy though, a 670 should chew BF3 like nothing.

Got 4 or 8 GB of RAM?

I've got 8GB installed and another 8GB waiting incase of shizzle... o.O
Also the Asus Tweak thing is like EVGA's precision so it's nothing special.
Gonna try reverting back to the 301's.

GPU is being utilized around 98% and sometimes dips down to 70% for some reason.

I'll just say that sausje is probably right about CPU being a bottleneck. I also had high usage on my Q6600 but it was still obviously crippling my system and the jump to Ivy Bridge was astounding.

Well if it turns out it is the CPU that is bottlenecking the system then I am fucked, since I'm unable and unwilling to change to intel due to hassle/cost. I just recently purchased a new asus crosshair MB for my 970 so I'm shit out of luck if I want to change.
I'm gonna keep testing though since I can't have the same performance with the 670 as I did with the 570. Surprised

Definately its bottlenecking, can get myself at 2560x1440 steady 60fps (everything on ultra expect FXAA on instead MSAA).

High CPU usage doesn't mean it's not bottlenecking, if anything it's quite the opposite actually Smile
It's GPU usage you need to be looking at, but since you say it's at over 90%, it doesn't indicate all that much either in this case. I am not sure why it would degrade performance over the 570 though. I imagine, even if it's bottlenecked, the 670 should at least provide the same level of performance.

That's normal for these new cards. They boos themselves when needed.

Ok, so it seems that the problem is somewhat fixed now. I forgot that I had max pre render in NVCP set at 2 and some other settings before.
So now I've increased settings and even turned on HBAO and I'm still getting the 90 frames I like without any severe dips. Very Happy

Woohoo! \o/

How does it perform in any other games? Have you browsed for performance issues with BF3 etc. to see if other people have the same issues?

EDIT: Ah, saw your last post... Grats to solving your issues. Smile

Wasn't that always the default setting? Confused

Default is 3 if I'm not mistaken but I've set mine to 1 now and it's silky smooth.

Anywho, i'm also going to check out other games but I can't really think of that many that are as demanding as BF3. Surprised

By the way, does anyone know a way so the GPU doesn't downclock itself?
Or at least not as much, it goes down as low as 324MHz while in 2d enviorments. Sad

Just a quick update...
I've been running and trying like mad to figure out why I'm not getting the performance I should and I have to admit, it's the CPU. Sad

I've been playing around with settings etc as well as monitoring while being in-game and the CPU is spiking as hell at times. Sad

Ohh well, my last hope is piledriver then... T_T

Your only choice is Intel... Piledriver is like 15-20% better than current Bulldozer. In other words piledriver will be roughly the same performance as Phenom II (maybe 5-10% better per clock which is still gonna be bottleneck).

Intel vs Amd difference is just so big these days, AMD cant even come near in gaming performance. Good example is that even my previous laptop (i7 2630qm) is getting about the same score in 3dmark11 CPU test than 8 core Bulldozer, which is just sad.

Well, Then I won't be playing any BF3. Sad
I'm not going Intel over one game. T_T

Edit:

On a side note I'm seeing plenty of people who also have issues with cpu spikes running an i5 2500k.
So I'm honestly starting to wonder....

I mean seriously, a 4Ghz (tried to up it to 4.1Ghz which made little to no impact) and a GTX 670 _should_ be enough.

I remember when playing the alpha and using my 940@3,5Ghz with a GTX 285 getting a decent 60+ with everything on high. Something is terribly off here... T_T Crying or Very sad

AMD's current-gen CPU's are terribly off. Higher frequencies give less performance than the old PhenomII's.

I'm using a Phenom II x4 970BE, so I'm not even on bulldozer or thuban (still on deneb).

Also from alot of benches I've seen the fx-8150 doesn't perform that bad in BF3 due to it's 4 moduels...

Anywho, it's still cheaper for me to just get the piledriver (well, depending on price) than upgrading to an i5-3750k (or even a 2500k) with new mobo which isn't poop and probably new ram sticks.

I'm honestly very satisfied with my rig in general, just not the performance I'm getting in BF3.

I'm playing with everything on high (except mesh which is low), no aa and fxaa on medium with HBAO on (v-sync off). Resolution is at 1920x1200 (older 27" monitor) so that's chewing up abit.
