Is this a repost?
Quote: | Zynga unceremoniously broke the news to well over 100 employees at its Austin, Boston, and Chicago offices during Apple’s attention black hole of an iPad Mini conference. And while Zynga’s hardly the first company to time layoffs with major press events, it’s still pretty darn yucky.
As of writing, the Austin layoffs have been confirmed, with the studio still remaining operational at a vastly smaller employee count. According to Gamasutra, however, both The Ville (target of EA’s much-publicized lawsuit) and a new IP are “done.” Meanwhile, word on the street (read: Twitter; streets went extinct 36 years ago) is that Zynga’s closed its entire Boston studio and carved up much of its Chicago location with a job-reaping scythe. |
I know they made a heap of mobile games, but they also made some great PC games like Farmville too

I can't wait until the mobile/tablet/facebook bullshit gaming fad is over. I know it will be a while - but eventually, people will realise how pointless and hollow that shit is.

Casual gaming is a double-edged sword; you may have massive amounts of players, but keeping them hooked for long-term, and more importantly, monetizing them can be difficult (especially on facebook, people don't really spend money there). Investors just saw the amount of players Zynga had, and in their greed overvalued this house of cards.

Yeah, wait until EA fires a few hundred people and shuts all their casual studios before you start reading too much into it....

Farmville Apocalypse: could Zynga layoffs mark the beginning of the second dotcom crash?
The future for Zynga is not bright. One industry analyst I spoke to said: "The people who have left or are being let go are the creatives they need to keep going. Their revenue stream is basically investors' money. Sooner or later that will run out. Too much of what they are buying is vanity stuff rather than the talent to make another hit." Unless that big hit comes soon, Zynga is finished – and when one big dotcom goes over, others will inevitably follow, as investors rush for the exits. We've all known the second dotcom burst is coming; could this be it?

Seems more a problem with mismanagement and overly optmistic expectations. I doubt it's a "dotcom crash".

Of course there is no joy: they've invested as much as Zynga. |
and they made a profit.

Good riddance. There's no talent at Zynga, everything they put out is wholesale lifted from somebody else's games and I doubt anyone will lose any sleep over the closure of Generic Cloner Laboratories #1-3.

Oh.. and yes, hopefully it goes without saying that I feel bad for the programmers/developers/etc that will lose their jobs, especially in the current employment climate. I just don't have any sympathy for the company itself.

How is it excellent? How are these 100 individuals responsible in the management's decisions that you'd be happy for their firing? It is never happy to see people being laid off. Never, regardless what company they have worked for.

Of course, and obviously I really hope they can find another job soon, possibly in a better company than the old one.
That said, Zynga going down is an excellent news for gaming

But I agree somewhat on the kids working part.
Here everyone stares down on the employment of minors... except if he's an actor
In that case "Awww he's so cute, so talented, blablabla"
But if some kid that has no interest in school wants to follow a craft like being a shoe-fixer, mechanic, electrician, etc it's "OMGZ think of the children!1 You HAVE to attend to school, or else the police is going to pick you up at home/wherever you are and bring you here! "

From what i recall, the communists had those craft schools for people that didn't want an education. Still, they wouldn't hire a minor in a factory, shop, etc. At least not in the Eastern Europe. But they did offered paid apprenticeship for the kids that had 16(qualfication at the working place).

How did they over invest on copy/paste?
It's like the cheapest easiest investment there is.

Quote: |
Hacker collective Anonymous is now aiming to release, what they say is, confidential information from the company Zynga, which recently uncovered its plans to sack hundreds of its employees.
The hacker group claims Zynga documents detailing plans to lay off 800 employees in a move that would signal the "end of the US game market as we know it." They plan to release this information on November 5, unless Zynga cancels their plans regarding the layoffs. Anonymous revealed this via its official news channel.

I don't really know what to say, seems a odd target to me but I guess they are going on whatever is in focus at the current moment?
(Unfortunate if they start leaking personal details of course.)
