I tried searching but it's hard to go through the long threads. I'm just wondering if it is possible.
I have Half-Life 2 Retail Standard Edition purchased at EB last week I think (it was a gift, haven't even rip the seal tape yet.) and obviously it has a legit cd key. (A) I'm wondering if it is possible to download PROVISION release of Collector's Edition and install it with the legit cd key I get from my Store-Bought Retail Standard Edition?
(B) Also, does Steam explicitly check the CD Key every time you play online or does it only check your Steam Account which already associate with a CD Key?
(C) If Steam does check CD Key everytime, does the check also consider which Edition it is and block the other games, such as HL Deathmatch, from being played since I only have the Retail Standard Edition?
(D) If Steam doesn't directly check the CD Key everytime, is it possible if I download and install, say, HL2 Deathmatch or HL1 Source addon and play them with my Retail Standard Edition online (all servers) and offline respectively?

provision doesn't need an key since it doesn't require to have steam installed but you'll need update 1 + 2 to get proper gameplay

far as i know the cd keys are not cd-specific, cause u register them on steam, and how can steam make sure that its that exact cd in your drive?...
reg it on steam, and then just install hl2, no matter which version, it should work fine
but i would reccomend someting like six-steam instead of the real steam...
again, im not 100% sure cause i only got the vng.. but my experience with this crap sofar makes me think its quite possible and should be easy enough
but once your cd key is regged with steam, i dont think u can change it to another account or someshit, so be sure u wanna use that info...

So you mean that even with my Retail Standard Edition CD Key, I can still download HL2 DM and HL1 Source through Steam? I thought those are for Silver and Gold Editions only!?

lol HL2 DM is free for any version of half life
Half life source does require a cd key, but it's supposed to be crappy, so do yourself a favor and skip over it or play the old half life.

no.. ur retail standard cd key can only download you HL2 DM, CSS, HL2... datz it..

Ok thanks for clearing it up. My original questions still remains though ... Can a Standard Edition Key be used to install Collector's Edition?
So if I want to play HL1 Source, I will need to download PROVISION's Collector's Edition, right?
Or is there another way to get and play HL1 Source with my Retail Standard Edition (assuming getting original HL is out of the question)?
