Though Elysium has only been in theaters for a couple of weeks, Sony has already given director Neill Blomkamp’s next film a release date. The sci-fi pic Chappie will open in theaters on March 27, 2015, adding yet another film to look forward to in what’s shaping up to be the busiest moviegoing year in history. The only other film currently set for release on 3/27 is DreamWorks Animation’s spinoff The Penguins of Madagascar, but Marvel is poised to invade every available screen a little over a month later when The Avengers: Age of Ultron opens on May 1st.
With Chappie, Blomkamp reunites with his Elysium and District 9 star Sharlto Copley once again. The pic tells the story of a robot (Copley) imbued with artificial intelligence who is stolen by two local gangsters who want to use him for their own nefarious purposes. Ninja and Yolandi Visser are onboard to play said gangsters. Production on Chappie begins this fall in South Africa, but it appears that Blomkamp will need plenty of time to complete the film’s extensive visual effects.
Story details:
Quote:
Blomkamp has only said that his third feature film will be a blend of sci-fi and comedy, with script co-written by his wife Terri Tatchell and, of course, another starring role for his District 9 and Elysium collaborator, Sharlto Copley.
However, Den of Geek reveals in a new article that Chappie will actually be based on one of Blomkamp’s earlier short films; the filmmaker himself confirmed as much, telling DoG that Chappie is “Basically based on Tetra Vaal.” If you have never seen his Tetra Vaal short – no worries! We have it for you below:
Blomkamp went on to confirm that yes, the robot in that video is the same character for Chappie that he’s hinted at in previous videos – and that the robot will retain his rabbit ears, which are a distinct homage to the robot character Briareos Hecatonchires from the manga/anime, Appleseed. There’s speculation that South Africa (Blomkamp’s home nation) will once again be the setting; but when questioned whether Copley will be playing the robot character via motion-capture, Blomkamp would only respond with a coy, “Maybe.”
The short film is definitely presenting an intriguing concept; however, one has to wonder what the word “comedy” means in the mind of Neil Blomkamp. In District 9, “comedy” consisted of scenes like Wikus Van De Merwe (Sharlto Copley) standing in front of a shack of burning alien fetuses with a dumb smile on his face as if he deserved a Scooby-snack for his work. So the ways in which a film about a Third World robot policeman (who learns to love?) could make us laugh… well, it really does just tickle the mind, now doesn’t it?
The youtube video is pretty cool.

Yeah the reviews are a bit over the place. Tho when I see some critics and their likings I wonder why'd they even watch this movie (paycheck obviously ).
Ah well, I'll find out on Tuesday if I'll like it.
I was very interested initially, but after having seen the official trailer, I'm not sure anymore. It felt like a typical hollymovie with barely any depth..I hope I'm wrong
I'll probably catch this at a later time, it always struck me as kind of an odd movie with some questionable casting choices. It keeps getting compared to district 9 does it not?

i watched last night and absolutely loved it, decent story, the character "chappie" was cool and loved the gangsta lingo he picked up (this will be the comedy reference) and agree with timechange01 - got a tad weird towards end.
I love District 9, I really like Elysium and I thought this was entertaining but easily the weakest of the three. I loved Chappie as a character and I liked the ending.
Worse than Elysium ? Holy shit, how can you even achieve such a feat.. That movie was an abomination.
So, a question to everyone that saw the movie, are you still excited for the new Alien ? (that's gonna be directed by Blomkamp)
Ah, that explains who that "Die Antwoord" dude is that so many people hated. "Oh no, Die Antwoord is in this!"
I mean I thought it was a dude, it turns out it's the name of a band which I've never heard of before and have no idea why they are hated or what they are doing in a movie

i have no idea why people are making a thing about those two weirdos being in this. american movies cast rappers all the time, its the same principle... casting weird freaks who cant act out of fandom or to attract a certain demographic is nothing new.

i never miss a chance to say NOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!111
this is worse than when we found out brett ratner would be doing the third xmen movie and yes i keep bringing up my disdain for them picking this guy to direct it, but only because im such a fan of the franchise... its suffered a brutal one-two punch from resurrection and colonial marines, finally clawed back some respect with isolation, and now this happens...
