I stopped wearing a watch 15 years ago, when I got my first mobile phone, it seemed unnecessary anymore

It's a style thing these days but I once bought a watch which, for me, was really expensive (€125 in today's money) back when I was in the last year of high school. Took all of two weeks for someone in the locker rooms to break the wrist band and since then I never bought anything but cheap watches that still last a long time.

Been wearing a 100M graded water resistant Seiko automatic watch for 3-4 years now. It's brilliant really. Can go swimming with it and never have to change battery (It will die at some point I expect but still).
IMO a reliable watch (not some iCrap) is very convenient and not just a style thing.

To be fair, an "iCrap" watch (on a smartphone, or some other "smart" device) is likely to be more reliable overall due to online or GPS syncing, which will use atomic clocks as its source.
It might not be as accurate second to second, but that kind of a thing is very rarely of any use to most people.

I'm not a big automatic fan myself. While I do own many higher-end automatics, I prefer the older mechanical winds. My Speedmaster Pro is my favorite watch, period.
The reason I say this is that automatics simply need to be serviced more often as the first thing to go is always the rotor. My manual wind watches always go much longer without being serviced.

I don't get it, what's so special about it that it costs 400USD?

Personally, I don't like these models. Too much stuff on it. When it comes to analog watches, the wind up ones are the way to go (preferably the skeleton models that shows the mechanic).
I have one of these:

I understand the appeal of mechanical watches, but they don't have to be automatic, right? They can run on batteries, correct?

.. Then it's a quartz watch. Any 'digital'/quartz watch that has gears and hands isn't fully mechanical.
Mechanical means completely driven by a spring.
And again, not all mechanical movements are automatic. You can have manual wind as well.

So is there any real significant difference between a quartz/digital and mechanical ones? Or is it just simply the price tag and status of it?

Well, I buy it because I like the engineering behind it and it's something I can understand.
I do not like a lot of mechanical watches, and most people wear something that isn't interesting.
