...says Capcom.
Quote: | On-disc DLC enables "more flexible and efficient gameplay"
Responding to consumer complaints about its business practices that were lodged with the Better Business Bureau, Capcom has said it doesn't believe there's a distinction between content locked on a disc and DLC.
The fighting game maker came under fire when fans discovered 12 hidden Street Fighter X Tekken characters already on the disc, presumably to be unlocked as DLC at a later date.
Capcom took the opportunity to respond directly to fan complaints, saying:
"At Capcom, we value our customers and make every effort to resolve customer complaints. We are sorry to hear that [censored] was so disappointed with the Street Fighter x Tekken game (''SFxT''), and would like to respond to his complaints."
"While Capcom is sorry that some of its fans are not happy about the chosen method of delivery for the DLC, we believe that this method will provide more flexible and efficient gameplay throughout the game's lifecycle." |

There is indeed little difference. Both make you pay extra for stuff that could and should be included in the original game. What does it matter whether it's already on the disc or has to be downloaded separately? Result is the same.
That's why I pirate. So I don't have to deal with any of that shit.

There are still some DLCs done right, like Episodes from Liberty City or Undead Nightmare.

I wouldn't call them DLC, even though they are downloadable, they're more like expansion packs with redeeming qualities worthy of your money.
DLC on the other hand is a fucking plague, especially Capcom's shitty efforts. |
EFLC is *exactly* what SHOULD be called downloadable content. If every developer did DLC the way R* did EFLC (and specifically TBoGT) I'd happily throw my money at them, because that was well worth it. Everything else is the shit that's wrong, that's unlockable content, not downloadable. You already fucking paid for it, it's on your disc (or in your digital copy's files), there's nothing to download.

DLC can stand for both Downloadable Content and Disc Locked Content but there is a HUGE difference. Capcom is just ran by a bunch of idiotic retards who probably don't look beyond the abbreviation.

This is bullshit. DLC should not be included on the disc. If content was developed prior to game release, it should have been included.
It was easier in the past. Game. Year later expansion pack(separate campaging- almost sequel).
now its part of the game. part in a dlc, mp maps, mp skins, etc etc etc.

Capcom
DLCs are one of the cancers of gaming industry and trademark of this Nextgen era, but sadly until sheeple will keep asking for them the situation won't improve, rather it will get worse, with opportunist publishers and their distorted conception of downloadable content which is indeed basically synonym for disk locked contents.
There are exceptions of course, but they're the 1%..

That's completely true what they're saying. If by gameplay they mean profit margin.

I really don't understand what there is to discuss
A developer can make the game and then take a portion out of game and put into DLC.
They can then put it on the disc or sit on it for a few months and release it then.
I'm unsure what the difference is between seeing the disc content and knowing they made it during development and getting it in a few months and being 99% sure it was done during development anyway but with no proof.
Most DLC is at least planned to be done during development, the only time this wouldn't be done is if they are unsure if the game will do well or if they are behind schedule on a release date by a large company (EA etc)

No.
Just no.
The difference is that a DLC is content that is created AFTER the release date and then sold, like expansions but smaller, while disc locked content is content that was created before release and thus should be included with the original purchase.
That is a huge difference. |
And how can you tell whether said content was developed after release or alongside the main game? Perhaps it was scrapped content that ended up in the trash bin until someone found it and decided to release it as DLC? Or do you rely on what devs claim, like what Bioware did recently with their day1 DLC fiasco?

The company that makes the game gets to decide what to sell as the base game, what to sell as part of a limited/collector's/whatever edition and what to release later. Why do people mind them not releasing a few characters on the disc but don't care that they don't get all the "collector's edition" stuff when they buy other games?

Most who oppose to that shit also oppose to collector's editions that have extra content unlocked. I do at least. A collector's edition should contain stuff that's interesting to..collectors. Like action figures, (autographed) posters, that kind of thing.

But the thing is, the developers can do anything they want with their product, split it up in as many parts as they want and set whatever price they want, there is nothing restricting them from doing this and there shouldn't be.
Its your choice whether to buy their product or not. |
Exactly. Everyone needs to decide for themselves whether an extra character/a few lines of dialogue/some new weapons/couple extra quests etc. are worth the price tag or not. The point in time when they were developed in relation to the game is irrelevant.
