So after a loong time, I turned Ubuntu on today and got an update notification, so I did the update. All's fine and well until the resolution started to bug me, so I tried changing it to a higher one but it won't show up.

At this point I have to say that my current display is an older 20' LCD monitor with a 4:3 ration so I usually use 1280x1024, but Ubuntu only shows me 1024x768 and I can't find any option for advance settings or something like that, in order to force other resolutions. Or refresh rates for that matter.

Any way to fix this? Confused

I always update, never had problems Razz

Did you connect it via VGA or DVI? DVI should always list out the proper resolutions.

And yes, make sure to install proprietary drivers again. I need to install Catalyst as well to get everything to work properly Smile

1280x1024 is 5:4 not 4:3 ^^

Whatever, not_wide_screen_ratio was my point. Laughing

Seems the proprietary drivers are fucke for me with 11.10, I get "No proprietary drivers are in use on this system".

Balls.

Remove them completely, reboot and install them from scratch Smile

If you're on ATI/AMD: sh /usr/share/ati/fglrx-uninstall.sh
Then just grab the latest and install that. If the above doesn't exist, purge all fglrx package with aptitude and delete your xorg.conf. Warning, it MAY not be able to get straight back into the GUI after that (Xorg doesn't like being bashed into reset like that) so download the new one beforehand Razz

I had to remove the default shit as well to install the proper Catalyst. And yes, I'm on 11.10 as well Smile

Tried remove/reboot/reinstall - both driver packages - but none worked.

Could you be more specific about the last part, I'm fairly new to Ubuntu. Very Happy

I assume "sh /usr/share/ati/fglrx-uninstall.sh " is for the terminal, if so, it can't be found. So how do I purge all fglrx packages?

Yeah that's terminal stuff; can be done via the GUI, but terminal is quicker Razz

Download the new driver from AMD directly before doing the following (I'll assume you save it to ~/Downloads). In terminal:
Code:

sudo apt-get remove --purge fglrx*
sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf
sudo apt-get remove --purge xserver-xorg-video-ati xserver-xorg-video-radeon

Think that clears just about everything. Follow with this:
Code:
sudo sh ~/Downloads/ati-driver-installer-xxx.run
sudo /usr/bin/aticonfig --initial

Should do the trick Smile

Disclaimer: I'm not responsible for you ending up in a pure terminal-only view Razz

You're right, it seems to be working fine on FF, Chrome/Chromium has issues with it though. Laughing
Thanks! (again Very Happy)

i thought there maybe was an option that showed only a certain resolution, like 4:3, 5:4 etc and thats maybe why you couldnt see the resolution Smile

Yeah for my monitor it shows 800x600 and 1024x768 with 4:3 along them but for my HDTV it shows me 1280x1024 - 5:4 and 1920x1080 - 16:9.

So basically it only show the ratio along the resolution and there is no option to se the ratio and change the resolution based on that.

What does it say in

cat /var/log/Xorg.1.log | grep "mode"

or just upload the file somewhere

Yeah, I ended up doing just that. Though the drivers I know I need won't work with Ubuntu 11.10 and the one's I tried tell me my graphic card ins't an ATi one. And after rebooting the OS strips all the visual fancy stuff saying the graphic card can't run all that. Laughing

I'll have to try an older distro that works with the appropriate drivers. Fun.

This system uses an ATi x1650 Pro, witch worked fine so far with both Win7 and Ubuntu 11.04 and all graphical eye candy enabled; and they are enabled in 11.10 too without the drivers. So the card should be more than enough for basic use.

On Win7 I used the legacy drivers, witch I believe are 10.2, but on Ubuntu 8.10 and 9.10 it got picked up by the OS/Additional Drivers, if I recall correctly. So I have not manually instaled drivers before, but on the AMD sited it says 9.3 is the version for the card, and I assume that is the legacy one for linux, however it won't work with anything higher than Ubuntu 9.04.

Didn't see this.

Here's the Xorg.0.org log:

 Spoiler:

There is not Xorg.1.org or at least I couldn't see any in var\log\

Back on 11.04 and same shit, with the using the ati drivers but the gnome interface isn't supported, because according to Catalyst the graphic card is not an ATi one. Laughing
Well, at least I had a higher resolution now, max being 1152x864, witch is what I'm using. It's no 1280x1024 though. :/

Try forcing it, with the xorg.conf

I doubt it will work

btw, you are using the ATI cats

Quote:

[ 17.498] (II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/extra-modules/modules/drivers/fglrx_drv.so
[ 18.524] (II) Module fglrx: vendor="FireGL - ATI Technologies Inc."
[ 18.595] compiled for 1.4.99.906, module version = 8.84.60

They are a pile of shite under linux though if you are not into linux gaming use the free radeon driver its better for everything but advance 3D - http://www.x.org/wiki/radeon

Fuck ATI cant even get basic shit working in their linux drivers half the time.

What? Mine work fine Very Happy

The only "problem" is that when I change display modes and hit apply, it closes CCC (applies the modes properly though). Oh noes Sad

@ cobalt: you need to purge the ATI drivers properly. Seems like they weren't installed from the official Catalysts, or updating Ubuntu removed the relevant files.

I couldnt even get fglrx to ALT + TAB out of full screen openGL apps

Its a known bug too, been floating about for 18 months Surprised whereas with the nvidia blob is just works.

about the only reason to use fglrx (apart from games) is the fan control, but they may have fixed that now in the radeon driver.
