Need to know how much space Ultimate take vs Home Premium. I am using Ultimate at the moment but i just ordered a 128gigs M4 SSD and every bit of space will be important. Never truly used Home Premium but i'm pretty sure it use less space then Ultimate since it has less features . I'd just like to know how much exactly. And yeah i did take a small look at google and i;m pretty sure it's out there somewhere but a straight answer would be better and because i'm a lazy fucker Very Happy

If i can save a couple of gigs by going to Home then i will do. The XP machine on Ultimate is sort of nice but i never used it or the other extras features it has over HP anyway.

The extra "features" that make up Ultimate don't really add much to the install size... EXCEPT! languages. If you install the language packs on Ultimate then that really bumps the size up.

Sorry I couldn't directly answer your question about install size, I don't have any info about base install for either version. Perhaps someone else may be able to help a bit more conclusively? Either way, I don't think you're going to run into any issues on a 128GB SSD Very Happy There is one pretty significant tip I can give you, one that pays off in the long run rather than short term; disable Windows search! After a period of time, the search database grows to disgustingly large proportions -- and yet the Windows search built into Vista/7 is still hideously broken anyhow. I recommend disabling search and then installing a replacement, such as Everything.

Everything builds its database in seconds, tallying every single file on your drives, and is no bigger than 100MB tops .. as opposed to a Windows search database that eventually grows into 10-15GB. At the start of a Win7/V install the search database/index is pretty small, but it does grow and it grows large and fast.

There is one drawback to Everything .. and it's either major or minor depending on your usage of the PC; only NTFS. Not FAT/FAT32/FAT-X search support... Everything can only index and search NTFS volumes.

The 3rd thing i always do after installing Windows and then updating is to disable a bunch of crap i never use but i never tried to disable Windows Search. I will try it but my question is : Do i actually need a replacement for Windows Search ? I pratically never use it anyway and i sure as hell can live without it unless it is related to some other processes and make other tasks not function properly.

As for not having a problem with a 128gb , well yeah but my goal is to try to fit my 60ish gigs MP3 collection on it along with BF3 , extra space for another game (that i will always install /uninstall after playing) and leaving about 5-10 gigs of free space for breathing room. It will be a tight fit. If the drive was truly 128gigs as advertised and not 119 i wouldn't have a problem but alas it's not.

Now i could always leave my MP3s like i will do with my movies , iso files ect on my external HDD but i listen to a lot of music and carry my ext HDD around quite a lot so it's not always plugged into my desktop and it's just going to be a bit annoying to always work this shit out. I could also leave my current 500gigs WD HDD in the desktop as a second drive but i want to go completely silent and my HDD is the only thing that is still making some noise (aside from the dual fan on my 6950 when it's in action but that's not an issue since sound from my speakers drown the sound anyway).

If only those fucking 256gb SSD weren't 350 + bucks....Sad. I do have the money but i simply can;t justify paying that much for a drive that i know will be about 150$ in a year or so Razz

Well, ProgFiles/ProgFilesX86 notwithstanding, my three year old Windows 7-Pro/x64 install - sans Search database - is 17GB. With the search database it was over 30GB, which is still more than enough to have 60GB of music, 10GB of BF3 and give you around 19-20GB left over to play with. Even with the Progfiles and Users maps, I'm still only pushing 30GB total on my three YEAR old Windows install. I think the music might be a waste of space and potential, especially on an SSD (you'd honestly be better off buying a 64GB MicroSD grinhurt) but I still don't see you having an issue with your 128GB drive.

As for a search replacement? Nah, not "essential" if you don't do any searching - but if you actually DO search from time to time, then yes; it's needed. Once you disable/remove Windows Search you are literally left without a single means or method of searching for files on your drives. Oh and another plus to Everything; searches are instant.. and I do mean nanosecond instant.

My ultimate installation (SP1 + all updates) is 19.4 gigs but it's 2 months old so the Windows Search database ain't that big obviously. I will disable it on my SSD once i receive it tomorrow but probably won't install a replacement. I will just reenable it and then re-disable it if i need to search something Razz

And yeah you're probably right as far as my 60gigs of music is concerned. It may be a waste on an SSD but i need my music close. Anyway i may not put the whole 60gigs but maybe put 20-40 gigs of what i listen to the most and put the rest on my ext HDD. That could be a good compromise i guess.
