|
 |
I'm sitting here thinking that I want to upgrade my PC, but unsure what route to take, what to buy/upgrade. First and foremost, I do two things on my PC - I use Adobes Creative Suite (Photoshop, DW, Illustrator, Premiere etc) and the other is gaming (which I seem to do more of lately )
My current setup is:
i5 750 @ 4Ghz (Corsair H50 w/ Scythe Typhoons cooling it)
4Gb Corsair 1600Mhz RAM
2x GTX 460 1GB SLI
2x 500GB 7200rpm drives
For example, I can't max out BF3 @ 1920 since I run out of VRAM - understandably so. Skyrim works nicely, even with some mods, but I love eye candy and with all the HD texture mods and such, I have to run it at 1680, which I honestly have no real problem with, but it would be nice to be able to cram even more candy out of it
What I'm thinking is, maybe atleast grab another 4Gb of RAM, because honestly, they are practically giving RAM away nowadays. Secondly, 2500k, worth it or not?
Also, in the GPU department, GTX 570 - I know that in raw performance vs 460 SLI, the 460 gives more FPS, but in the long run, is the 570 better? it has slightly more VRAM and obviously doesn't suffer from the side effects of SLI.. Or is the "best" choice GTX 580? How about ATI/AMD? I don't care what brand it is, as long as it works.
Or, would any big spending be stupid at this point and not net me nearly as much performance in relation to the money I have to spend?
Ideas people, share them

Can't remember the model name, sorry, but it's a BenQ 24", 1920x1080.
Anyway, put together this for kicks:
2500k - AFAIK, the H50 will fit as the 1155 socket isn't that much different than the 1156 one? I have to OC, ofc
ASUS P8Z68-V LX, Socket-1155 - Z68, UEFI, SLI & CF support etc. Do I need anything else, really?
Corsair XMS3 1600MHz 8GB KIT CL9 - Needs to explanation
Corsair SSD Force Series F80A, 80GB - I have no clue as to what SSDs are good, but how's this one?
These parts together are pretty damn well priced, converted from Swedish currency it results in 485 EUR/405 GBP/627 USD..
Edit: I don't HAVE to buy a 2500k of course, but I feel like I want to Just gettings RAM might be the wisest choice spending-wise, but in terms of performance, it can't beat the step up list above..

So no use getting a 2500k/SB then?
Also, is Force 3 one of the best choices when talking SSDs?

Forget sandforce,
Grab a crucial M4 128gb ssd.
Cheaper + 8gb More capaqcity + None of the issues sandforce users have been seeing. and while not as fast as the Vertex 3 you wouldn't notice any difference.
Corsair 750D :: 750W DPS-G:: Asus x370 PRO :: R7 1800X ::16gb DDR4 :: GTX 1070::525gb SSD::Coolermaster 240MM AIO::

Don't buy anything. Wait untill SSD fully matures and prices drop (it's too pricey imo), wait for the new GPU/CPU series. Upgrading would be useless atm.

M4 is actually faster then the Vertex 3 in compressed transfers. In real world usage (OS, games, etc) the Vertex 3 is a little bit faster though.
I'd just get whatever one you can get for cheaper.

There is not going t be a huge change in SSD prices anytime soon so it's not best waiting.
Mechanical HDD's are just shit in comparison for OS drive. You would never use one again once you make the switch.

Wait for Ivy bridge or wait for Ivy and then buy Sandy lol. Their prices might drop little but I'm not 100% sure. Most probably they will so it's worth waiting slightly.

Ivy will replace Sandy. And no, there's absolutely no point in waiting for SSDs to "mature" (the technology is fine, it's the price that needs to drop - which it won't until the next Flash node until late this year); the expected lifespan of an SSD is still longer than most of us even use a mechanical drive for, so unless you fuck it up deliberately, you'll be fine. Like Slizza says, once you get an SSD you'll hate PC's that run off mechanical drives though

No reason to wait for Ivy. Most boards will support Ivy with a bios update. Just get a 2500k or 2600k and call it a day. The release ivy chips aren't going to be any faster then the current 2x00k's.
Right now is the perfect time to buy SSD's given high prices on mechanical drives still.
The latest generation 120GB SSD drives cost $180 something. A 500GB higher-end mechanical drive is still like $130. Back when I bought my caviar black 500GB that fucker cost $160.
Once you use SSD you'll never look back. In only a year 512GB SSD's will be on par with what the 128GB SSD's cost right now, and once that happens there will be absolutely no reason to go mechanical anymore.

The price/GB ratio of SSDs is ridiculous imo. Comparing mechanical prices to SSD is ridiculous too atm since there are shortages which inflate prices.

Wait for Ivy (i7 3770K), it'll be out in a few months since you're that eager to upgrade.

How am I doing it wrong? I don;t think 128GB isn't worth that kind of money even if it's super awesome SSD. SSD will interest me if 128GB gets below 100 bucks, but at this moment I'd be paying premium prices because it's new and shiny.

Because you're looking at how much storage it provides.
I'll say it again: you do not get an SSD for storage. Honestly, unless you've seen what it does, you can't judge whether "it's worth it". I bought both my V2's at 100 EUR for 60 GB and I'd do it again in a heartbeat (I loved what my first one did so much that I got the second one in the same month). It is by far the biggest performance boost you can give any decent PC right now, unless you're on a 7 year old piece of crap. It is so much of a boost that it annoys you when you use a PC on a mechanical drive, regardless of how fast the CPU/GPU in that are or how much RAM it has.
