We're thrilled to announce that Starpoint Gemini 2 will become available today on Steam Early Access!
Starpoint Gemini 2 is a project mostly based on our experience from its prequel together with a vast number of gamers who showed great patience while being involved in a 3-year endeavor of exchanging and brainstorming ideas. We’ve learned a great deal from you, the community, as to what your ideal space tactical game would be. A lot of things we communicated are already implemented, but now, we feel the time has come to show you the basis upon which we will continue to build together with you. We invite you to join the effort!
For those of You more into modding, try out the Material Editor. Use this tool to create models ready to be used in-game. Do you want your ship to have more turrets? Use the Ship editor (part of the Material editor). The World editor will become available in time, but we wanted to avoid any potential problem with the main game data. Once we’re 100% sure it’s safe, we’ll release the World editor so You can unleash your creative potential.
Please bear in mind that this is an alpha version and you’ll likely encounter bugs and glitches. Our primary concern is that every update we release makes/keeps the game as stable as possible. We’ll be very grateful for any info You can provide concerning bugs or suggestions. With every fix, the game will only get better.
Here’s a short list of things that are already in the game and that you can do in this Early Access version:
• The entire Gemini game world to explore, complete with 14 planets and over 150 space stations to use for repairs, upgrades or trading
• 70 different ships to purchase and fully use
• A lot of different Ship systems to upgrade your ship with
• A lot of different Enhancements to improve your ship systems
• All planned light and heavy weapons with accompanying visual and audio effects
• Several types of Freelance missions that generate according to region parameters
• A dozen different random encounters that generate according to region parameters
• Trading is implemented, so you can trade to your heart’s desire
Starpoint Gemini 2 is a well thought-out game, but we’re always on the lookout for great ideas and suggestions. Feel free to post them on the forums and in the meantime, below is a list of features we’ll be implementing over the coming weeks. We’ll do our best to implement any suggestion wherever possible.
Here’s our very own to-do list:
• Fully implement and test main missions and accompanying cutscenes
• Fully voice-overed main mission dialogues
• Scripted side missions that grant special rewards
• More different types of Freelance missions that are generated based on player actions and allegiances
• More different types of random encounters generated depending on player reputation, region parameters and global events
• Randomly generated global events that influence anything from commodity prices and legal status to region ownership
• Player triggered global events that change when certain conditions are met (example: war between two factions that the player triggered while solving main missions)
• Fully implement and optimize large dust clouds (nebulas)
• Implement riftways as another fast-travel option
• A lot of optimization to ensure the game runs smoothly (model instancing, optimized level of detail etc.)
• Graphics improvement (tessellation)
• Fully implement 3 character classes; each with its own set of skills, skill modifiers and visuals
• Fully implement perks that apply special passive bonuses
• Complete special equipment to install on your ship
• Implement Licenses which grant special options and bonuses
• Implement Officers to fill key positions on your ship and accompanying bonuses
• Improve holographic panels on the outside of stations to show actual information (commodity and equipment prices, news etc..). Different logos are currently shown.
• Expand news section on stations and planets to show more varied information (commodity prices, global event news etc.)
• All around balancing of ship systems and ships
• Implement hiring of mercenary ships to join your fleet
• Implement issuing of orders to your mercenaries
• Improve the game world with more scenery, more events, more everything
• Launching and commanding fighter squadrons
• Balancing troopers and ship capture mechanics
• Detailed testing and bug squashing
• World editor finalization for public use
• Improving Material editor for ease-of-use
• Detailed testing of in-game options
• Steam workshop integration
• Steam achievements testing
• Full in-game mod integration
• Localization to different languages

Just tried it, since it's a alpha it's still rather rough like for example the settings menu doesn't do much of anything so you have to tweak the config files to set different options.
As you start the game you are basically free to explore the universe however you want and there's a few tutorial messages explaining the basics.
Docked with a nearby station and checked out the available trade goods, weapons and systems for the ship and other ship models, you start with some credits and a OK ship so I just looked around a bit before leaving without buying anything.
Tried some combat next as two small ships started attacking and it's pretty simple but it's functional, basically target them and keep firing while trying to avoid being hit, controls are pretty simple even with mouse+keyboard input.
Then I flew too close to a planet and crashed / burned in the atmosphere ending the current session.
(You can't save or load, you are just sent back to the main menu to try again.)
I'm definitely looking forward to this, but at the moment €18 is too much for me. I feel like such an ass, but I think I'll wait until the game is out and possibly on sale :\
Waiting for the final product might be better, you'll get the game when it's complete without all the issues people in the early-access builds will encounter and thus the initial experience will likely be a better one too.
I like seeing seeing how games progress throughout development so I'm really enjoying early-access via Steam and other such alternatives.
(Seeing how ArmA 3 has changed from alpha to beta to near release has been very interesting to give a example.)
UPCOMING CHANGES:
•Expanded in-game options
•Toggle on-screen notifications (community request)
•Unlocked several video options
•Toggle bridge officer chatter (community request)
•Added on-screen notifications like Level-up, Experience gained, Credits gained, Reputation changed (community request)
•Added quick target info - when you first target an object, a small representation of the object appears so players can almost instantly see what the target is exactly and its status (community requested)
•Added reputation panel so players can have an overview of their standing with the 50+ game factions
•Added Fleet->Systems panel
•Added Fleet->Officers panel so players can see their hired officers, their bonuses and salaries
•Added Station->Officers panel so players can hire new officers
•Added Perks panel
•Added the ability to purchase new ships and store them directly from the Shipyard into the Garage
•Added Bounty board to the Starchart where players can look over the different „heroes“ they can hunt down for a reward
•Added pre-rendered intro movie for the campaign
•Added Loot panel for captured ships
This update will be paired with a price increase to $22,99, while we’re steadily moving closer to Beta and Final Launch of the game next year.
We will continue to offer Starpoint Gemini 1 for free so this remains a great offer; be sure to order at the current pricepoint while you can though.
The update is completed, compiled and uploaded for final testing, but an unexpected problem occurred with Steam wrapper applied to every game. Versions of the wrapper have been switched and as a result our prepared .exe file cannot be initiated. We're working with Steam guys on this issue as fast as possible, but decided to delay the update for (probably) 1 day until we resolve this issue together with Steam. Price will naturally also remain intact until the update is live. It was planned to go together and it will remain so.
EDIT :
Update is out and price has changed to 21,49€

v0.6000, November 20, 2013
-----------------------------------------
Crossing over into the 0.6 number range with a one day delay. This is the largest update so far ladies and gents. We've done some work on the GUI, we've updated our bonuses mechanics (applied to skills, perks, officers, equipment...).
Browse the change list below for details please . Our plan was to include a few starting campaign missions, but unfortunately some late encountered issues prevent us from doing so, but then we'll simply bump that part into the next update.
For now, you can start the campaign from the New Game screen and have a look at the campaign intro movie. That should give you a clue as to what the storyline will focus on. Let us know what you think of the game and the update on the Steam community page or
on our very own forum at http://www.starpointgemini.com/forum and above all else, have fun!
The announced price change is left to Steam to apply at their own convenience, but we felt it would be unfair to keep you ladies and gents waiting on the update any longer than necessary.
A big thank you goes out to Steam devs for their quick assist in the unfortunate issues that appeared on November 19th. And naturally a GREAT BIG thank you to YOU the players for your support and patience while the matter was being resolved!
