I watched Tron Legacy for the first time while I was fucked wayyyy up on Swine Flu + Wisdom Tooth removal Hydrocodones. Ever since then I sometimes watch the ending and imagine the wonder it would be to feel the warmth of the sun on your face for the first time.

It sounds kind of stoner fucked up. But related to this. It's remotely possible in the next year for a few weeks we will have a Second Sun.

This can happen next year..or in 100,000 years. But can you dare to imagine in our lifetime we get to visually see a star go Super Nova? I feel this would give every human on earth a chance to feel the sun for the very first time..and is something that if it did happen within our lifetime, such a common occurrence (in relation), could change the human species for generations to come.

Kinda fucked up article. "Two Suns? Twin Stars Could Be Visible From Earth By 2012 " then --No, tomorrow, next year, or 100,000 yrs. The 2 updates at the end.

I dismiss this article as fantastical bullshit. But interesting bullshit never the least.

It's not really fantastical, but is is premature to claim it. The odds of us seeing a Super Nova star EVENTUALLY are 100% even if it is our own sun.

As an enthusiast in this type of subject..I would die happily seeing this though, so it is easier for me to go all mushy about it.

Edit: By "us" I mean Earth..not necessarily Humans..as it's unlikely we will be around for too too long before the Sun forces us Earth to start wearing a Flea Collar to get rid of us Wink

First of all... It's the huff post xD

Second of all, it's your own fault you didn't get a small telescope and saw that SN that was visible a month or so ago It was call the super nova of our generation, or sth like that.

Betelgeuse, in our current time, is most certainly not there anymore. It's ~600 light years away iirc, so even if it went SN today, you won't see that in another 600 years.
But seeing the phase it's in at our current time (red giant), means that it'll likely go SN soon Which means it's actually no longer there (well not at least in the red giant phase).

As for our Sun, you are safe for another 5 billion years, more or less. And our star won't go SN, because it doesn't have enough mass...

I'm guessing if the Huff is claiming a possible black hole formation 1300 light years away that's the distance of Betelgeuse..

I know it's no longer there as I enjoy the field..but I am hoping that maybe the event will produce enough light in our time to be visible without a scope Smile

I was a bit curious if it has collapsed into a Black Hole...maybe it will devour us eventually LOL

Happen to know the movement / what orbit it lies in?

Spaz, have you been touched by some religious priests while on medical drugs?

It is extremely massive, so if the conditions are right and the neutron degeneracy fails, it could become a black hole, but I don't really know that much about this particular star... It will become a SN, but what will be after is hard to tell... And I don't think it will devour us Laughing

The opposite of the stuff written in spaz' first post takes place in Asimovs "Nightfall" and is pretty amazing actually.

Quote:
The fictional planet Lagash (Kalgash in the novel adaptation) is located in a stellar system containing six suns (Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta are the only ones named in the short story; Onos, Dovim, Trey, Patru, Tano, and Sitha in the novel), which keep the whole planet continuously illuminated; total darkness is unknown, and as a result so are stars outside the solar system.

A group of scientists from Saro University begins to make a series of related discoveries: Sheerin 501, a psychologist, researches the effects of prolonged exposure to darkness, Siferra 89, an archaeologist, finds evidence of multiple cyclical collapses of civilization regularly occurring approximately every two thousand years, and Beenay 25 is an astronomer who discovered irregularities in the orbit of Lagash around its primary sun Onos. Beenay takes his findings to his superior at the university, Athor, who formulated the Theory of Universal Gravitation (the in-story discussion of same making light of an article once written about Einstein's Theory of Relativity, referencing the false notion that "only twelve men" could understand it). This forces the astronomers at Saro University to attempt to find an answer to what is causing this anomaly. Eventually it is discovered that the only thing that could be causing the deviation is an astronomical body that orbits Lagash.

Beenay, through his friend Theremon 762 (a reporter), has learned some of the beliefs of the group known as the Cult ("Apostles of Flame" in the novel). They believe the world would be destroyed in a darkness with the appearance of stars that unleash a torrent of fire. Beenay combines what he has learned about the repetitive collapses at the digsite, and the new theory with the potential of eclipses and concludes that once every 2049 years the one sun visible is eclipsed, resulting in a brief 'night'.

Since the current population of Lagash has never experienced universal darkness, the scientists conclude that the darkness itself would traumatize the people and that the inhabitants of the planet would need to prepare accordingly. When nightfall occurs, however, the scientists (who have prepared themselves for darkness) and the rest of the planet are most surprised by the sight of previously-invisible stars outside the six-star system filling the sky. The short story did not cover what happens after that, but in the novel and X Minus One program, civil disorder breaks out; cities are destroyed in massive fires and civilization collapses, with the ashes of the fallen civilization and the competing groups trying to seize control.
