Electric is easier to play than acoustic, but for your fingers not to bleed on the acoustic you can just change strings (altho that would make the sound kinda quiet). For a beginner I would suggest Squire by Fender, they are decent guitars, with not that thick neck. You don't need to toss your money on 'real' guitar in the beginning stage. I have seen, altho it was some time ago, a nice Squire starter set: guitar and a little amp.

Or you can, if you wish, just buy a guitar and hook it up to your comp via sound card and use a program for effects (I have Guitar Rig 4 and it rocks Very Happy).

sorry but squier guitars are a pos, only go for one of those if you're a fender fanboi and your budget is 200 bucks max Razz (and that includes the amp)
ibanez or maybe olp provide a much better value for your money if you're willing to spend a bit more

got guitar rig 4 running here too, but it's a rather messy and inconvenient if you run it without the controller (btw, the guitar rig 2 ones are quite cheap if you get a used one, no need to go for the 3 or 4 ones)

Get a cheap kit (electric guitar + 10w amp), do some of the free lessons @ http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ and then start to jam to songs once you've got the dexterity and basics down. No point in wasting money on a quality guitar in the beginning.

maybe an acoustic is what you want then ... strumming some chords is pretty relaxing and ofc sounds better on acoustic rather than electric Smile

Strumming some chords is relaxing if you have played guitar b4, but if you haven't you'll wish you were never born grinhurt The strings on acoustic guitar (not classic, those are even worse) are way thicker than on electric guitar. It took me about a month to get my fingertips to harden when I started playing on acoustic, and I couldn't play for more than half an hour because of the pain.

I was saying squire because it's cheap, and you don't need beast of a guitar when you're a beginner. But that ibanez sure looks nice Very Happy and is not that expensive...

EDIT: I just looked up that ibanez guitar, and ppl say it's shit :\ It goes out of tune pretty fast (because of the cheap floyd rose). But hey sYn you have tons of money (by the look of that chair you bought grinhurt), so you can buy any guitar you like (more expensive ibanez, jackson or my personal favourite Ernie Ball Music Man JP BFR http://www.music-man.com/instruments/guitars/john-petrucci-bfr.html - it costs ~ 4k $ but it's absolutely stunning ^^)

Buy a Vintage Guitars Les Paul (Vintage V100). Excellent in terms of quality-prize. Mahogany body and neck, maple top, good tuners, decent pickups (made by Wilkinson) and sounds good too.
Recommended! They stay in tune (i liked that the most in them) and sound good for beginners (even for those more advanced).
There also stratocasters and factory "destroyed" guitars that look like 30-year old's. Niiiiiice! Smile

And for the amplifier - i would say a small valve amp. Valve amps (full valve) are much better - Epiphone's Valve series, Laney LC-10 or LC-15 or another like those mentioned.

EDIT : All the stuff mentioned is meant to be the best for the money. And i did a research just a few months ago so i don't think anything has changed.
Although i live in Poland, but that probably only means we have that stuff in bigger prices than in other countries :/

i'd say it depends on what you want to play. if you're into metal and rock i doubt an acoustic is going to do much other than teach you the basics and then frustrate you. on the other hand if you start out with an electric there is much more technique to learn in addition to just playing. plus if you need the overdrive effects, chorus, flanger, whatever etc you could get discouraged.

i would say think what you want your playstyle to be. if you want to "just learn" guitar and you think acoustics sound cool then go that route. it will hurt your fingers more but after a while it won't bother you. if you're into pinch harmonics and dive bombs then you should probably start with an electric. playing an electric is easier on your fingers.

i had played an acoustic all my life and then recently got into playing some classic rock (van halen ftw) and it was terrible trying to take in all that goes with it at once. palm muting and trying to get the right tone in addition to trying to mimic evh's style? wtf was i thinking?

as for gear - hit up craigslist and get yourself a quality instrument at a decent price. when i started with my acoustic i let a friend talk me into some 120 dollar johnson bullshit and all it ever did was hold me back. i couldn't understand why it sounded like shit and the strings rattled and i always thought it was me. years later when i finally got what i call my first real acoustic (ibanez Smile ) i realized it wasn't me that sucked after all and my playing took off.

edit - also just thought about the noise an electric can make. if you have whiny neighbors, live in an apart complex, etc. may be something for you to consider. you can always buy a pocket pod or a podxt and run headphones.

If you want specifically to go for acoustic, my artistic girl friend told me that acoustic guitars get better the more they are played - so buy second hand, but from or escorted by someone that knows guitars..

yup, wooden instruments seem to get better with the time that they have been played (thats why classic instruments played by true masters have such an immense value). Resonance and sustain. Thats why some guitar companies "vintage" their guitars by vibrating them in certain machines. Weird shit.

it is weird but there is a lot of truth to it. i have an alvarez acoustic that's got some age. i bought it from a pawn shop and it was split through the middle and had been repaired. i got it for a little over 300, it was 1200 new. i had a gibson songwriter acoustic/electric that was 2000 when it was new and to me the alvarez blew it out the water.

just be careful with used instruments. not everyone takes good care of their stuff so age/vintage doesn't necessarily equal great tone and character.

no, just no. there are some vintage instruments out there that sound better than new ones, but that's only because of the materials and craftsmanship involved. it's true that stuff like the wood tension etc changes over the years, but not all of it has to be good.

i have read some articles some time ago on aging e-guitars by vibrating them after having seen a tv programme on it. I cant find the ones i remember, but i found a similar one about accoustic guitars:

http://www.acousticguitar.com/gear/advice/vibration.shtml

You willl not be able to make a good guitar out of a really rubbish one though. But you ll be able to make a good one into an awesome one.

Acoustic is good... If you're a hippie.

Seriously though, go electric right from the start, and stay away from the very low-end junk like Squier. I don't know that much about Ibanez, so I'll just recommend ESP because they're badass. Smug

Oh and for a good starter amp, consider Roland's Cube 30X - bought one for my little brother and it has pretty damn decent cleans as well as distortions, one of the best I've heard in that price range.

If you just want to start playing without having to study theory and all (time for that later if you're so inclined) just grab the Guitar Pro program - there's loads of songs available for it online, and you can also turn any midi file into a GP tab. Great for beginners since you can slow the song as much as you need and then gradually up it to the real bpm, or just train a certain part of a song. I especially like converting old nes/sega/snes tracks into it. Very Happy

I started out in school with vinyl stringed acoustic, learning silly folk songs and stuff like that. Quit after a year since it was soooo boring. Was always into music though, keyboards, computer music etc.. and 1990 I bought a crappy Duke Les Paul copy for $20 which was okay to learn the basics on, then in summer 1991 I bought my Fender Strat in the local music shop and I've stuck with it ever since. Had a marshall combo for a while, then later on a Peavey Bandit 112, but pawned that and have used Guitarrig with Reaper after that. Looking for a new combo or amp/cabinet setup again since I'm about to start playing with some other guys again after a long hiatus.

PS. I learned most from jamming to records. Only bothered with tabs with stuff like Satriani (Surfing with the alien book) that I couldn't figure out by ear.

yeah, you can count me in as well
i have a shitty old guitar, it sounds pretty good, but i need to get it fixed

if the repairs exceed 25 euros, i'll throw it away, since it's too old to be worth it and i'd be getting a Yamaha F310.

As a sidenote, can anyone who knows guitars help me out, what kind of guitar is in the below picture ? If you'd know the model and brand it would fantastic.

Fuck buying something expensive. To start just buy a cheap Yamaha combo, and just start working it. Plenty of 'how to' videos on youtube. It just takes a lot of practice, and you'll see what you need to see in the youtube videos.

whatever u do, dont get a first guitar with a whammy bar. too much hassle for u and u probably wont use it much. Usually guitars with whammy bars that cost under 800-900 euros have cheap materials used in the bridge area and they wear out quickly. If u buy an acoustic, id recommend to go with metal strings not nylon.
