i bought two 3tb drives a short while ago and used them under xp on a board with an intel raid chipset. And since i knew i was going to update my mobo soon, i didnt mind, that it only went to 746.5 GB when formatting.

now i have the new mobo and switched all the hardware and used my old xp install (because i have shitloads of audio-stuff installed that would take ages to reinstall). And now the 3tb drives arent showing up as formatted anymore... Crying or Very sad

You used the old XP install with the new mobo ?

You need proper drivers then, right ? Wait, I'm comfuzzled.

3TB can be problematic on older OS's as far as I've understood it, XP is around 1 - 1.5 TB for the main OS HDD and 2TB for storage?
(Or was secondary/storage higher?)

Also it is one of those monthly update discs right?
(Or else you'll have a 128 GB disc as max, pre-SP1 limitation.)

i have migrated that xp over two mobos now. It holds a shitload of virtual instruments that takes over a week to install again. Migrating by uninstalling stuff and re-setting the hdd-driver is a no-hassle work of 5 minutes (and the installing of new drivers is the same amount of time it would take for a fresh install. Minus the fresh install. So its a win-win situation, and i m not talking about hot window-to-window sex xD)

the issue is that the old intel-chipset detected and formated the 3TB drives as 750 and the new chipset just hides the drives and the formatting from windows.

I m going to install Win7 tomorrow as a dual boot anyways (and see if i can see the drive contents then). Too lazy to try anything else at the moment.

Even though i love the penguins, linux and mac does not game. It also does not do professional audio properly and / or with that amount of virtual instruments. And since dx10 / 11 so far were far below expectations, i didnt miss much. Wink

When you've got XP installed, plug in a 1TB drive and copy everything off that completely failed RAID set. Then delete it and recreate it properly if you need RAID (I suppose you're using RAID1 for mirroring).

Other than a modern operating system, proper memory management, proper mulicore support, different driver model, etc., indeed you don't miss much. Laughing

Even tho Leo often exaggerates, I agree Very Happy

The only thing I really hate about Win7 is UAC, but its easy as hell to turn off. I just rage a little every time I have to turn it off one someones computer. FUUUU MS -.-

I still use my WinXP from time to time, especially for PS2 emulation.
Game performance is generally a tad better on XP in Dx9 mode.
The PS2 emulator just doesnt run well on Win7 (x64!), I get constant micro-freezes.
Guess there's just not enough RAM.
On XP 32-bit it runs like a charm even though I have 1gig ram less there Rolling Eyes
