I wonder if getting this thing will improve my sound. However, I basically need it because of the optical IN, but if I can't buy a card that has solely that feature, I'll go for something that has it all and rather use it instead of the built-in realtek hd audio.

It should sound looooot better than integrated Realtek. Smile Especially the tremble.

wow, I love this forum, replies are so fast.

anyways, so you're saying the Realtek ALC889 codec that comes with my mobo will differ a lot in terms of quality?

I sometimes get like small sound glitches when switching between windows and stuff.

I just wonder how better can it get, what will I notice?

The analog output on any X-Fi or Xonar is lightyears ahead of even the ALC889 (which is the top integrated chip really). It's not as much any single factor, it's just a whole lot of them. No glitches, deeper and clearer tones, a proper equalizer if you need it.

Sounds good, I wasn't expecting people to say it's actually worth the money at this time and age. Laughing

I checked the Asus D1, it's lacking Optical I/O so it's out of the question.

God this had made me realise I still have yamaha speakers I bought back in 1999!! Did have a sub but only two desktop speakers with onboard sound now.

Maybe I should atleast invest in a newer set of speakers?

Heck, a basic Creative Labs 2.1 set (or logitech or whatever brand) connected to a discreet soundcard like X-Fi (or the new generation), Auzentech, ASUS etc. will provide QUALITY sound. Wink

Considered getting a new one ~3-4 months ago but realized that there was no point.

Got one off ebay, says to be new but opened, 52$ shipped. Now I need to get an optical cable to unleash the 5.1 surround from the PS3. Smile
