Hey all,

that time of the year again. I'm looking for a new laptop for light gaming/coding. Meaning I REALLY want to have a SSD and dedicated graphics. Anyone got any recommendations? Price range isn't a problem, but keep it under $1.5k preferably Smile

What I've got so far:
http://www.amazon.com/HP-ENVY-14-2070NR-14-5-inch-Notebook/dp/B0055MUD3M/ref=sr_1_1?t=slickdeals&tag=slickdeals&ie=UTF8&qid=1315542413&sr=8-1

Cheers,

-t

what the hell happened to that lenovo!?!?

don't go HP, their laptops have been really horrible lately. Stick with Asus or Lenovo

give us some more requirements of the specs, and you will have alot more choice and probably a better SSD if you buy it seperatly and add it before installing windows.

At least 4GB of DDR3 RAM.
Really don't care about processor.
15"+ would be nice.
Any disk size, just make is SSD. I'm good with managing my files.
Wifi.
Err, what else is there in a laptop that's important?

I got a M14x for $1500, then bought an SSD separately (Crucial M4 128GB) for $176. Getting an SSD from Apple/HP/Dell/Anyone is always at an inflated price, usually more than double what you would pay for something much faster.

It runs everything I throw at it @ 1600 x 900 including The Witcher 2, Crysis, DE3, Metro, Dead Island. Playable frame rates with nice detail settings... it hasn't disappointed me so far. Very quick and powerful.

This was chosen after a lot of research. It's as ugly as hell but it also has a lot of battery life due to Optimus (GT555m on power, dedicated intel graphics on battery).

If battery life didn't matter I'd get one of those custom laptops built. They're cheap and can be good substitutes for desktops with today's low hardware requirements.
Yep looking at M14x right now. Everything I want except SSD is missing. I might end up doing what you did.

Agreed. I want to avoid HP is possible. The Lenovo is still fine, just getting old. The screen is falling off, WiFi stopped working, keys aren't working well, touchpad dying etc etc...

I bought this http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004I1J864 and have been extremely happy with the performance. The hybrid drives are actually very fast. The only complaint that I had with it was the stock partitions on the primary HDD. They were strangely sized (something like 116 and 327). I could understand partitioning the drive into two halves, but this was just weird. Luckily, I resized them and fixed that error first and foremost. Also, the area around the trackpad (where you rest your palms and/or wrists) has a tendency to wear down rather quickly and become smoother than the surrounding areas (probably just from my fat, greasy, American hands), so if you use this as your primary pc (which I do during the day as it's my work laptop), plan on seeing some wear within six months.

I can also tell you that the lighted keyboard is a very nice feature, especially in well-lit rooms since the keys have a tendency to get a bit glossy after a lot of use. And the paint on the keys doesn't wear off, which is nice.

The GT460M on board has run everything that I've thrown at it, so far (The Witcher 2, Trackmania Canyon, Dead Island, Deus Ex: HR, Crysis 2, etc.). Hope this info helps and good hunting!

edit: I just noticed that this http://www.amazon.com/G74SX-XA1-Republic-Gamers-17-3-Inch-Gaming/dp/B00592CFFM/ref=dp_cp_ob_pc_title_0 is available now for not much more and it comes with the GT560M and more memory, but not the hybrid drives.
