Obviously yes, it would enable people to die with some dignity maybe by a pretty nurse with a lethal injection, you don't allow an animal to suffer but we connect people to machines and make them suffer for months even years, sadistic bastards we are.
None of us chose to be born, but as higher functioning beings each and every one of us intrinsically posses the personal right of choosing when and how to die. We should not, especially in first world countries, have to jumps through bullshit hoops just to make the politicians feel like they're doing something important / morally correct.
The fact of the matter is that none of us have ever walked in another man's shoes, and until one does so one simply cannot judge another man's decision to end his life. His reasons are his own and he owes no explanation to anyone (be it another person, organization, or a government body) as to why he chose to end his life.
I see those who claim that suicide is a thoughtless, cowardly way out as ignorant cowards themselves. Their claims are usually either based on religion (I'm not going to start on this) or from a sense of emotional/moral superiority (I got through it so why can't you?). Both of these claims, are, in a word, bullshit. Going any further would most likely result in a massive wall of text, so I'll leave it at that.
From a personal perspective, I'll say this, and this is something I've thought long and hard on - If I'm ever afflicted by a wasting terminal disease, paralysis, loss of sight or cognitive ability, or any other factor which I deem to drastically limit my quality of life in the future, I'm quite sure I'd have no problem whatsoever in putting an end to myself. I'd much rather it'd be in a dignified and relatively painless way than having my brains scattered on the side of some alley. The point being, I have that right (as does everyone else), and it will get done one way or another if I so choose to use it. Why burden the social system with cleanup/manpower/paperwork/fees when it could all be done in a much more civilized manner?
My two cents. And bravo to Dignitas and its founder for having the resolve and will to help these people and stand up for something that is so unnecessarily taboo.
I can never be free, because the shackles I wear can't be touched or be seen.
