A paraplegic ex-marine war veteran is unwillingly sent to establish a human settlement on the distant planet of Pandora, only to find himself battling humankind alongside the planet's indigenous Na'vi race in this ambitious, digital 3-D sci-fi epic from Academy Award-winning Titanic director James Cameron. The film, which marks Cameron's first dramatic feature since 1997's Titanic, will be shot on the proprietary FUSION digital 3-D cameras developed by Cameron in collaboration with Vince Pace, and will offer a groundbreaking mix of live-action dramatic performances and computer-generated effects. Australian actor Sam Worthington stars as the reluctant human settler Jake Sully, with actress Zoe Saldana signing on to portray the local woman who enters into a romantic affair with the hero. The revolutionary motion-capture system created for the film allowed the facial expressions of actors to be captured as a virtual camera system allows them to see what their computer-generated counterparts will be seeing in the film, and Peter Jackson's Oscar-winning Weta Digital visual effects house has been hired to supervise Avatar's complex visual effects. Wes Studi, Sigourney Weaver, CCH Pounder and Michelle Rodriguez round out the cast.
Sam Worthington as Jake Sully, "a paralyzed former marine who undergoes an experiment to exist as an avatar, another version of himself... an alien – 10 feet (three meters) tall and blue." Sully is able to be part of the alien world in his avatar, a genetically engineered biological body that can be remotely operated by a human consciousness. Director James Cameron cast the Australian actor after searching the world for promising young actors, preferring relative unknowns to keep the budget down. Worthington auditioned twice early in development, and has signed on for possible future installments.
Zoë Saldaña as Jake's alien love interest who is betrayed then loved by Sully. The character will be entirely computer generated. Saldaña has signed on for possible future installments.
Sigourney Weaver as a botanist who mentors Jake Sully. Weaver was cast in February 2007.
Michelle Rodriguez as an ex-marine pilot. Cameron had desired to work with Rodriguez since he had seen her in Girlfight (2000).
Giovanni Ribisi as Selfridge, a passive-aggressive character.
Stephen Lang as a Marine Corps colonel. Lang had auditioned for a role in Cameron's Aliens (1986) that he did not get, but the director remembered Lang and cast him into Avatar.
Joel David Moore as an anthropologist who studies plant and nature life like Weaver's character.
yeah one thing i love about camerons work is that hes one of the few directors that understand that cgi should support the story, not be what the film is built around *cough*georgelucas*cough*
we'll they're talking Avatar Day , that means about 20 minutes of footage for free in august , in every 3D / 3D Imax theater but i don't know if it's in only in the US or worldwide.
Exactly 10 days left for the release of the first Trailer, it is obvious to me that Cameron will not show the best scenes in the trailer, but despite of that, the trailer should still be mind blowing, Cameron doesn't disappoint!
He who sacrifices freedom for security deserves neither

a: no cameron never dissapoints
b: i HOPE he doesnt show the best scenes. always annoys me when the trailer is better than the movie... i LIKE being surprised when i realise that the movie is so much more badass and has so many MORE amazing things to show me than the trailer did... ARRRRGGGHH I CANT FUCKING WAIT THIS MOVIES GONNA BE FUCKING EPIC.
im such a fuckin cameron fanboy, but so fucking what. so good to have him back making movies after so long.
Haven't really followed Avatar's development that much and the presentation he did at E3 was so goddamn boring that it lowered my interest even further.
Still, probably have to see this in the theathre, but whether it'll be on premiere or on the last week of showing will depend on the reviews.
When James Cameron, the director of Terminator 1/2 & Aliens, makes the world most expensive movie to date and says Avatar will have "the mother of all battles" i am instantly interested.
