That chart is misleading
For reference, several American states have extremely high HDI that puts them in the top-10:
The problem, as the blogger put it, is that income inequality and inequality in standards of living are extremely high across the USA. Thus it's misleading to compare total USA HDI to several tiny European countries.
The American South (coincidentally the bastion of our right-wing movement) are extremely-undeveloped. They also have other shocking statistics, such as a murder rate three times that the rest of the country. The more left-leaning coastal areas (see California and New York) have a much better developed HDI, and yes, they're great to live in So please don't judge us because we happen to co-habitat our continent with a bunch of retarded rednecks we can't get rid of:

Sometimes my rage gets the better of me and I just wish people like this would fuck off and die. I used to think their ignorance was merely something to laugh at, but if you look at their antics in Washington you see they're not a bunch of hicks anymore, but a raging mob with enough torches and pitchforks and ignorance to do lasting damage to this country. This is one of the few countries in the world to never, ever, ever miss a debt payment. Laugh at our borrowing habits, but we have a perfect record in our centuries of history. Iceland and Ireland will drop considerably on that list after the last economic crisis. The reason why Sweden isn't top with the rest of the Nordic countries is because we have accepted far too many immigrants at once without being able to integrate them properly into society. More immigrants per capita than any other country in the world if I am not mistaken.

I seriously doubt Iceland has the highest standard of living, they are pretty much FUCKED as much as Greece. But Norway routinely comes first in many of these types of statistics/polls..Denmark was the happiest country in the world, though!
