How freaking hard can it be?
I don't mean a GP but a freaking psychologist/psychiatrist that has at least semblence of knowledge about ADD, specifically adult ADD.
I could go through the whole story but I don't want to.
Long story short I think I might suffer from ADD.
If so I must have had it since I wa a child but I guess it could have been there.
Anyway it's not only my observation but that of my family as well.
(If you and your family seperately look at a list of symptoms and for most of them go "Yeah, he's like that" I think that's at least a strong idicator to get it checked out).
But I honestly can't because there's NO freaking doctor in my area that has a clue about ADD - let alone ADD in adults.

Fuck. I'm really at a loss here and to be honest I want to know, because if I have ADD that would explain why I'm - at times - failing so horribly in my university classes.

I suspect ADD in myself as well and never got it diagnosed though. Nevertheless you can look into information to help you organising your life. You don't need a diagnosis for that and you wanna stay clear of medication is my guess.

Well that's ADHD but I see no signs of Hyperactivity in myself so it's - if it is that at all - plain old ADD.

@iconized:
I don't want medication, like, at all. Don't think that would do me any good anyway.
What I forgot to mention is I'm gonna visit my GP next week and get him to thoroughly check me because there are some other nasty things that can have similar symptoms and I just wanna make sure that there's no tumour growing in my head :/
And the reason I want a diagnosis is it's either ADD or I'm just too stupid and lazy.
And honestly, I'd like to know Very Happy

I've had mine diagnosed some time ago. Incidentally, I went to the pharmacy today and collected 120 tablets of methylphenidate. I think I'll stay focused for the next two months Cool Face

OK... on a more serious note. Read this book: http://www.amazon.com/Delivered-Distraction-Getting-Attention-Disorder/dp/034544230X Very complete yet accessible information.

Also: take time to discuss this matter with the doctor as always. Don't jump to conclusions and diagnose yourself, which may be tempting with all the information on the internet.

About the clueless doctors: I don't know where you live but pretty much any doctor should have decent knowledge about ADHD. ADD is pretty much the same without the hyperactivity. Also, recently ADD has been renamed to ADHD-PI. The predominantly inattentive ADHDude. But ADD is still a well known concept, I can't imagine a doctor not having heard about it.

Argh, ADD. It's too easily diagnosed and doctors are too easy with medication. Thousands of children every year are drugged into docility because parents and doctors think they have ADD.

Well I guess you can tell yourself if you are smart of stupid. Thing is people with ADD or ADHD can be quite smart but sometimes (or often) fail to deliver. Especially if things really don't interest you, it is very hard to master. I think you study computer science or something alike, are there courses you really like and easily absorb?

@Rofl_Mao:

From what I've heard/read from people from my region who tried to find a doc who knows his stuff it's mostly that they know of it but have no real knowledge of it, if you catch my drift.
And most of them seem to not even acknowledge the existence of adult ADD.
Oh and sorry I haven't read the DSM-IV yet so I didn't know they renamed it to ADHD-PI ;p

@iconized:
Yep CS it is.
The computer classes aren't a problem. The technical ones are a bit hard to get into but they grow on me. What kills me is math. It's really hard work for me to get into the books and even then I feel like I don't learn it though I should. (mind you we're talking Calculus 1~esque level of math here).
