i reckon you can quite easily walk the fine line.. dipping in to either side when the moment suits...
i mean our very nature is to be selfish, thats WHY humans are such a success... i dont see anything wrong with tapping in to our most basic survival instincts when we need to.
the positive side is that we have the capacity to ONLY do it when the moments are most suitable, when the payoffs are really worth it, so we can be nice and morally just for the majority of the time 
frankly if it came down to it.. the choice between stealing a single dollar from a homeless orphan if it meant that you would be rewarded with 5 million dollars without any strings attached... id be surprised if your 'conscience' would stop you.
