Answers to common questions and problems

  • What pocket pc unit would you recommend?

Dell axims are a great choice when considering features, quality and especially the price. If you're in need of a high end one for antialiased high res 3d gaming, Divx/xvid playback without any glitches and recoding, take a look at the Dell Axim X50V. If you want one just for the calendar, appointments, notes, 2d games, etc. Take a look at the standard X50 or even the low end model. Remember that the standard X50 is equipped with both wifi and bluetooth. The lower end model only has bluetooth.
  • Which are the most popular pocket pc's today and what are their strongest carracteristichs?

HP Ipaq's and Dell Axims. In short, Dell axims are cheap and Ipaq's have full support for Familiar linux.

  • What is the most high end Pocket PC available today?

The Dell axim X50V is what you're searching for. it's equipped with Intel 624 mhz CPU (can be overclocked), Intel 2700G 16mb graphic chip, 64mb ram (can be upgraded to 128mb), 640*480 VGA screen and Windows mobile 2003 SE

It can play a ported version of Quake 3 without any glitches. It's only a demo by Intel at the moment but there are other good looking 3d games available like: Cube, Stuntcar racing etc.

  • I'm so sick and tired of Windows mobile... Can I install Linux on my PPC?

Yes but if you're using anything else than HP Ipaq you're very unlucky. Dell axim also have some projects ongoing but they have much left to do. You will find much more info and status on the projects at the Handhelds.org site.

Please feel free to add any links or questions you would like to see/feel is missing in this FAQ.
