Distance is a survival racing game that combines the intense action of arcade racing with the exploration of an atmospheric world. You control a unique car that allows you to boost, jump, rotate, and even fly through a chaotic and twisted city. The world has a mysterious history, and as you explore you'll be able to uncover pieces of its past.
The game is a spiritual successor to the multi-award winning game Nitronic Rush, created by ourselves and 8 others while attending DigiPen Institute of Technology.
Doesn't look bad, BUT it seems like you only have to press W as there are hardly any obstacles or bends on this game. Waaay too boring for me if they don't change this.
Available December 9th, 2014, on Steam Early Access for PC, Mac, and Linux
“The roads are treacherous and unpredictable with obstacles around every corner. Instead of doing laps on a loop, you'll be trying to survive to the end in the quickest time. Since your car has several abilities, it allows you to not only drive fast on the track but also upside down and on buildings and walls! You can also fly to discover new shortcuts and paths. You'll be able to take on the roads alone, or in multiplayer with your friends.”
The world itself also has a secret history, which players will be able to uncover as they explore it by flying, driving up buildings and shooting down roads.
When is the game coming out of Steam early access?
When it’s ready, mostly likely in late 2017. We don’t have a massive number of tasks to complete before the game can be released, but being realistic we still have some big promises to fulfill and we can’t release the game until those promises are met. There will be a huge announcement when we’re ready to commit to a date. See “When will Refract know that it’s ready?” to see what’s left to do before then.
When will Refract know that Distance is ready?
Distance, as it is released on Steam early access, is quite far along. It’s a reasonably stable beta release with tons of single player and multiplayer features, 30+ Refract-created levels, Steam Workshop integration (with 1,800+ levels uploaded to Workshop), a powerful level editor, etc. The biggest things blocking us from a final release are a few features we promised during the Kickstarter, as well as a few features we feel are required for a 1.0 launch. As of writing this, Distance includes a complete Adventure mode (our short story/tutorial mode), a unique car for Kickstarter backers (or more accurately a system for multiple cars, plus a new model for backers), a stunt announcer, an attempted rework of Stunt mode, Steam/PS4 achievements, improvements to multiplayer accessibility, various multiplayer mode adjustments, PS4 technical certification requirements, an in-game Founding Modders designation, and a few other features.
We’ve already started work on each item listed above, so we truly are entering the final stage of Distance’s development. Some tasks are proving to be especially tricky, so we’re doing our best to keep scope in check while still living up to the original promises we made. Once we feel that each feature is complete, the last step is adding polish and doing additional testing with our early access community. We’ll be able to select a release timeframe and finally announce it to the world.
We recently released our most ambitious update to Distance yet: The Ghost Update. It features ghost racing, a replay viewer, official HTC Vive support, an increased online player limit, a new stats system, and tons of other improvements! It’s now available via Steam Early Access and Humble Bundle. Check out the trailer for a quick overview, plus your first teaser for the final release of Adventure mode!
The past couple months have largely been focused on wrapping up major content for the 1.0 release, including Adventure mode as well as some miscellaneous content for Arcade. Wrapping up a project of this scope has certainly been an immense challenge, but I can’t describe how exciting it is to see the pieces all come together.
On the PS4 side of things, our next major step is to take any content that’s locked in and do our best to make any required optimizations. Not only do our latest Adventure levels push the CPU to its limit, we are noticing that memory has finally become a concern. We’ve been holding off on these final optimizations until we knew how far the PS4 would be stretched. On the upside the visual quality of our environments has never been higher. We just have to ensure that the PS4 (and lower spec machines in general) are able to fully enjoy them.
Following gamescom we’re essentially moving into the final polish and optimization stage of development. We don’t have a perfect plan for what will be publicly released on PC before the 1.0 launch because our focus is 100% on finishing content for 1.0. There is (of course) an endless list of things we’d like to improve in the public build, but we must stay the course and get this 1.0 content locked in before moving on.
Anyway, our plan is to keep pressing forward and do our best to bring this project to a proper 1.0. We hope to see many of you at gamescom later this month, and in the meantime we can’t wait to witness the tournament madness this weekend.
Time to unveil one last big secret. Adventure isn't the only campaign coming to Distance v1.0...
Introducing the Lost to Echoes mini-campaign! Return to Nitronic City following the events of Nitronic Rush (our spiritual predecessor). Quite a bit has changed since destroying the CORE back in 2011.
After 6 years of development Refract introduces Distance v1.0. Now out of beta, v1.0 features a new story campaign, over 100 unlockable Arcade levels, new cars, a new cheats system, and tons of other improvements!
As our contribution to Distance Advent Calendar we're going all out and releasing Distance v1.1: The Nexus Update! This is one of our biggest content releases yet with 12 new levels featuring 6 new music tracks and a new mini-campaign.
