http://venturebeat.com/2011/02/22/lolapps-launches-a-novel-expansion-for-ravenwood-fair-facebook-game/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed:+Venturebeat+%28VentureBeat%29
A few interesting parts, cut -> pasted & edited by me:
Ravenwood Fair — originally created by Doom video game creator John Romero — is one of those rare games that is still growing after its launch nearly six months ago. (It) has grown to 10 million monthly active users since its launch in October.
At 10 million monthly active users, Ravenwood Fair has grown far above the 4.4 million users it had in December, according to AppData. At that time, the game was a financial success because more than 10 percent of those users were spending money in the free-to-play game. In such games, users play for free and pay only when they want to buy a virtual good with real money. Much of the money spent in Ravenwood Fair was spent on consumables, or items such as energy, which can be bought over and over again. Typically, only 3 percent to 5 percent of users pay for games on Facebook.
Ravenstone Mine, the expansion, was designed by Romero who, along with former LOLapps creative director Brenda Brathwaite, has mapped out a multi-expansion strategy for the Ravenwood-themed franchise. That means that Romero, as a consultant for LOLapps, designed the expansion for LOLapps to execute.
But Romero has now started his own social game studio, Loot Drop, with funding from LOLapps’ rival RockYou. He is being joined by Doom co-creator Tom Hall and Brathwaite. Both Romero and Brathwaite are helping with the Ravenwood games, but LOLapps has also hired veteran game creator David “Dr. Cat” Shapiro, a co-creator of the Ultima series of computer games. While Romero and Brathwaite are still consulting, Shapiro is taking over the strategic design role for the Ravenwood games.
In other news the company of Farmville creators, Zynga, is valued at 10 billion $$$ ( http://venturebeat.com/2011/02/17/zynga-funding-10-billion/ ), making them the second biggest publisher in the world right after Activision Blizzard.
Activision Blizzard: $13.3 Billion
Zynga: $10 Billion
Electronic Arts: $6.47 Billion
Rest: Less

It seems that soon I will finally stop playing videogames.
I'll easily find another form of entertainment, such as....hmm....let me think....I guess we are all fucking then.

@garus: Technically I have many girlfriends here, but it wouldn't be a bad idea to find a real one, with tits and all, that lasts more than one night

This is what happens when somebody finds a way to get money from retards |
Liking Zynga games doesn't make anyone a retard. Saying such things, on the other hand, makes you plain stupid.

Yes, because paying $5 for some extra potato seeds in a virtual farming game is the height of intelligence.

But according to the article only 3-5% of the userbase of such games pay. The rest play for free.
Romero's game is considered a big success because more than 10% pay. But still it's a low number.

It's just 5$, if it makes them have more fun, good for them. Nothing retarded in paying for some fun.

Except it's not just them, it's us too. Take a look at the DLC scourge we're been hammered with lately, all because a few people - at the start - thought "it's only harmless fun..." Then eventually more and more people started paying... now it's an epidemic and the ones that DIDN'T buy into that bullshit are now missing out, since games are being ripped apart and sold as DLC piece by piece because the publishers know they can get away with it.
Zynga has proven it's a workable business model, since they're now the 2nd richest game publisher on Earth. That doesn't scare you?

Dumb-ass typo "not = now"

You still have choice. You can only buy the main game and skip the DLCs. Or if you don't like the whole microtransactions thing that much, you can totally avoid those games (vote with your wallet), or just pirate them. This is simple business, you cannot win a fight with someone, who is willing to spend more money on a product, than you. Something would be very wrong, if you could.

Not really surprising if you think about how prevalent Facebook is, and how many people have shitty computers that cant run anything better than browser games.

There's a lot of stuff that I didn't play but am still interested in doing so someday.
Baldur's Gate 1&2, Diablo 1&2, all the Thief games, System Shock 1&2, Fallout 1&2etc.

A lot of people who pay also pay in large amounts.
Anyways the problem with Zynga isn't the fact that they're getting 10 billion of revenue, its the fact that its a god damn flash game that didn't even put that much money into it overall, and suddenly the profits are more than 100 times what they initially invested and didn't stop.
It's a freaking flash game, what the hell

always wished id had that poster... honestly... for over a decade now.. its so iconic very nostalgic. sure it was a failure, and shamed the fuck out of the man, but still...
but my dream would be to have any of the quake posters... sigh... a time when gaming was exciting... even daikatana, probably one of the best gaming related stories ever... one of the most important...
now, the best you get in terms of gaming stories is when you have is some cunts whining over not getting their due profits, boo hoo hoo... fuck off.
