So I thought I knew which laptop I was going to get. After narrowing my choices down to Lenovo and Dell, I was set on the Lenovo Y560. Now I find out the Y560 does not have the ideal configuration that I want. After more research in configurations, I have narrowed my choices down to Sony and Asus laptops. I would just like some of your inputs between the two. Maybe suggestions in other brands as well. Basically I am looking for a well built notebook with 500GB 7200rpm hard drive, i7-740QM CPU, dedicated 1GB GPU, at least 4GB or RAM (I can always upgrade that later on), Blu-Ray drive, and USB 3.0.Thank you.

Dell and Sony are both garbage. Dell is cheap because that's the type of hardware they use.
Sony the same thing but they made it look sleek then charge the hell out of you.
What are you doing on a laptop that warrants the need for a mobile i7
Alot of laptops don't generally come with 7200RPM drives due to the increased battery use.
GPU depends on screen size. A 5650 is perfect for a 17" laptop, my buddy has one and can play batman on max at playable framerates. Same with DOW 2. Thats on an amd tricore cpu. So an I7 is going to be overkill.
Not saying what you want it unrealistic, just getting a feel for what you need it all for.

I have an Asus G60JX 16" and have been completely satisfied with it. I use it all day at work and it is very comfortable and has a very brightly lit screen.
That being said, I think that the new version of this laptop is going to sport USB 3.0 and will probably have a better gpu. I agree with spykez in that an i7 might be a bit overkill, unless you are planning on doing some type of desktop-replacement activities (video/photo/music editing/encoding, tons of gaming, etc.).
I know that this probably didn't help, but at least I tried, amirite?

so basically it's going to be for games? encoding/decoding? If it's for games, go with an i5, it'll be more than enough. Depending on screen size a 5870 is overkill, uness you plan on using an external monitor that's bigger.
My buddy has a 17" screen, amd x3 and a 5650 and can play most games on max. so an i7 and 5870 are gunna be great for draining your battery and causing unnecessary heat. Get an i5 or something with a 5650 or so and you should be set.
